The term lingerie was derived from the French word linge which means "linen." It was not generally
used until the late 1850s, and according to existing literature, the first record of lingerie comes from
ancient Egypt around 3000 BC. This infographic shows how one of the most important women's

1500s

The first true corset --- a
tight, elongated bodice
--- was introduced as
undergarment by
Catherine de' Medici,
wife of King Henry II of
France.

1700s

The most common type of
corset around this time was
an inverted conical shape.

1800s

The design of corset
became less constricting.
The elastic corset and the
hourglass silhouette were
introduced. It was also
during this period when
crinolines, designed to
support the wearer's vast
hoop skirts, became
popular.

1900s

A young New York socialite
named Mary Phelps Jacob
created the first brassiere
made from two silk

1925

Camiknickers, a camisole
and knickers sewn
together, became popular
as they work well under
short dresses.

Christian Dior’s revolutionary
New Look took off.
