SOCIETY FOR UNION OF MUSLIMS AND EMPOWERMENT (SUMAE) FIRST GENERAL

CHAIR’S COMMUNICATION
1. Salutation:
Praise is due to Allah the most merciful the Compassionate. May His (Allah) peace, mercy
and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, plus his (Muhammad) Family and his
companions and unto those who believed him until the day of judgement Amen
2. Welcome/Thanks
I welcome you all on this first General meeting of the organization (SUMAE).Let me take this
opportunity to thank you all for having turned up in such a big congregation may Allah
reward you abundantly. I also thank more especially the Board members for being hard
workers in the process of chasing the documents because it is not easy and it wasn’t easy
for me to get these certificates. And I thank all those who advised me and helped me during
this course of processing the documents may Allah reward you abundantly here and in the
life after death Allahumma Ameen.
First and foremost be for I go any Farther, Everybody here would like to know what SUMAE
is?
SUMAE is, SOCIETY FOR UNION OF MUSLIMS AND EMPOWERMENT abbreviated (SUMAE).
This organization started in 2008 with two (2) members I who conceived the idea and Mr.
Katumba Faisal. Its original name was SOCITY FOR UNITING MUSLIMS AND SPREADING
ISLAM (SUMSI), but the name was changed after some advises from different offices when I
tried to register. It was due to financial constraints that led to the failure of registering by
the time.
SUMAE was fully registered as a Non-Governmental Organization on 19th May 2016 under
Registration Number 12163 and acquired a Certificate of Registration and Incorporation
from the National Board for Non-Governmental Organization, and a Permit to operate as a
Non-Governmental Organization.
Introduction of Board of Directors:
The Board consists of;
I. Chair: Nsereko Muhammad Mujaahid
II. Vice Chair: Mr. Katta Suliaman
III. Secretary general: Mr. Katumba Faisal zayd
IV. Assistant Secretary: Mr. Mpanso Abdul Karim
V. Treasurer : Mr. Ssesimba Umar
VI. Secretary For Religious Affairs: Sh. Abdul Wahab Kizito
VII. Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mr. Semyalo Shafik Kabazzi
VIII. Assistant Secretary for Religious Affairs: Sh. Hussain Kigongo
IX. Secretary for Gender Affairs: Mr. Katumba Abdul Hakim
X. Assistant Secretary for Gender Affairs: Madam Sarah Qasim Batuma
3. What are the aims and objectives of SUMAE?
i. SUMAE’s main aim is to give reality to the words of the Qur’an that “authority
belongs to Allah (Alone)” on a worldwide scale.
ii. The sources of absolute guidance are the noble Qur’an and the proven legal ways
(Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s blessings peace and mercy be
upon Him). Islam is non- elitists religion of equality. The caliphate promised by
Allah is promised to the entire community of believers, not to any elite or
individual among them. (Qur’an 24:55).
iii. To bring awareness to the Muslims and the public at large that Islam promotes
peace, love, tolerance, forgiveness, unity and reconciliation, which are totally
controversial to the principles of terrorism. This shall be attained by promoting of
peace training workshops, seminars, advocacy for unity and development
amongst Muslims of Uganda and elsewhere through increasing understanding of
Islam thus bridging or minimizing the gap between Muslims and other religions.
And we all know that “Muslims whenever they are should be one nation”.
(Qur’an 49:10).
Objectives: [Short term benefits (achievements)]
 Sensitizing youths and entire community about HIV/AIDS related problems;
 Propagating the true message of “Islam” and its love for peace, unity, tolerance,
forgiveness and reconciliation which are totally controversial to the principles of
terrorism.
 To collaborate with the government in support of issues including policy formulation,
monitoring, and advocacy for the right based approach and right to help and support
Muslims.

 Job Creation i.e. Establishment of self-help units, food production, brick laying,
carpentry, juice production, tailoring, cosmetology, farming, crafts among others;
 Soliciting for funds, scholarships, bursaries, sponsorship, donations and grants for
orphans, needy, elderly, HIV/AIDS victims, less privileged families and school
dropouts.
 Training of project beneficiaries in areas of advocacy in peace, unity and
development directly related to their needs and development objectives.
 Sensitizing the public about security and insecurity.
 To empower communities to effectively participate in activities that help in
generating income for effective poverty eradication and promotion of human rights
and rule of law.
 To offer variety of Islamic religious related activities in the communities as may be
deemed necessary from time to time to cope with the ever changing world.
 To amalgamate or become associated with or enter into any agreement for
reciprocal benefits or to co-operate or participate in any way or assist or
subsidize any company or person carrying on or proposing to carry on business
within the objects of the organization. Provided that such arrangements shall
only be entered into with entities having similar objectives with the organization.
Objectives: [Long term benefits (achievements)]
 Other objective rehabilitation and construction of bore holes, wells.
 Establishing Schools, Mosques and health centres and small scale industries and
transportation.
 To collect Zaka fees, daily dues (sadaq), grants and donations from civil
organizations which legally operate in both national and international levels
 To award certificates to members qualified in the Qur’an and traditions (proven
legal ways [Sunnah]) of the prophet;
 To write, produce and publish books, newspapers, magazines, audio visual and any
other form of document for the propagation of Islam.
 To fight against, combat, denounce and uproot innovations and atheism in Islam
through teaching, preaching, seminars, workshop information sharing and exchange
of ideas amongst Muslims.
4. Does SUMAE involve in politics?
No. SUMAE is an NGO, a not-profit making organization and free from any political
attachment. It only ensures management, preaching Islam, Training of project beneficiaries
in areas of advocacy in peace, unity and development directly related to their needs and
development objectives.
5. What are the Core Values of SUMAE?
a) Equity and justice
b) Honesty and transparency
c) Collective action and solidarity
d) Accountability and
e) Efficiency
6. Who oversees the organization’s activities?
SUMAE has fundamental organs designed for effective oversight and management and
sharing of experience. The governance structure contains Board of Directors who is
responsible for the general direction and supervision of the activities and operations of the
organization.
7. Who are the key stakeholders in SUMAE’s work?
The key stakeholders include;
 General Assembly
 Board of Directors and
 Special Committees.
 The general Public
8. Does SUMAE belong to any sect in Uganda or elsewhere?
No. SUMAE is an independent organization and its name implies [that] the organization is
mass oriented organization, which is open to the entire nation (Ummah).
9. What are the criteria of membership?
Membership to the organization is open to all national and international organizations,
institutions, community based organizations and individuals who subscribe to the vision,
mission, values, principles and the code of conduct of SUMAE and or support and
participate in programs of the organization.
Membership shall be categorised into:
i. Individual membership
ii. Honorary membership
iii. Corporate membership
iv. Associate membership
INDIVIDUAL (ORDINARY) MEMBERSHIP:
This membership category is by registration and comprises of individuals over the age of 18
years. He/she shall be an active member entitled to all rights and privileges and subject to
all obligations. The lifetime membership fee is SHS 55000.
HONORARY MEMBERSHIP:
Admission will be by invitation by the Board of Directors subject to approval by the General
Assembly based on:
I. Demonstrate interests, merits, and support the organization sector’s work;
II. Commitment and indication to quality of life transformation of the residents;
III. High esteem in organization
IV. Ability to promote the organization’s image in and outside the nation;
V. This membership category is by invitation only and comprises of Heads of State,
Heads of Government and Heads of International Organization(s). Currently there
are no honorary members yet; but this’ fairly based on the fact that since we’re just
legitimately a new-born-baby then… but soon by Allah’s Will, thus shall it so happen.
The annual membership fee is SHS 1,500,000.
CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP:
This membership category is by invitation only and comprises of prominent business
leaders, academicians, and heads of regional organizations and representatives of the non-
governmental organizations, institutions which subscribe to the interests and values of the
organization and willing to participate or support the activities of the organization. The
annual subscription fee is SHS 1000,000.
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP
This membership category is by registration and comprises of corporations, industrial,
Students, student organizations, Clubs non-governmental organizations and similar bodies.
Members in this category shall have no vote. The annual subscription fee is SHS 500,000.
RIGHTS of MEMBERS
The rights of a member could be summarized as;
1. To be respected and recognized.
2. To receive orientations and training for the job he/she is assigned to do.
3. To be given guidance and direction.
4. To elect committee members or to be elected to elective positions.
5. To be given appropriate and well defined assignments in the organization and on the
team.
6. To be kept informed. A member should always ask him/herself what he (she) can
contribute towards the achievement of the organization’s Aims and Objective.
7. The liability of membership is un limited.

Objectives: [Short term benefits (achievements)]  Sensitizing youths and entire community about HIV/AIDS related problems;  Propagating the true message of “Islam” and its love for peace, unity, tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation which are totally controversial to the principles of terrorism.  To collaborate with the government in support of issues including policy formulation, monitoring, and advocacy for the right based approach and right to help and support Muslims.   Job Creation i.e. Establishment of self-help units, food production, brick laying, carpentry, juice production, tailoring, cosmetology, farming, crafts among others;  Soliciting for funds, scholarships, bursaries, sponsorship, donations and grants for orphans, needy, elderly, HIV/AIDS victims, less privileged families and school dropouts.  Training of project beneficiaries in areas of advocacy in peace, unity and development directly related to their needs and development objectives.  Sensitizing the public about security and insecurity.
  • 3.  To empower communities to effectively participate in activities that help in generating income for effective poverty eradication and promotion of human rights and rule of law.  To offer variety of Islamic religious related activities in the communities as may be deemed necessary from time to time to cope with the ever changing world.  To amalgamate or become associated with or enter into any agreement for reciprocal benefits or to co-operate or participate in any way or assist or subsidize any company or person carrying on or proposing to carry on business within the objects of the organization. Provided that such arrangements shall only be entered into with entities having similar objectives with the organization. Does SUMAE involve in politics? No. SUMAE is an NGO, a not-profit making organization and free from any political attachment. It only ensures management, preaching Islam, Training of project beneficiaries in areas of advocacy in peace, unity and development directly related to their needs and development objectives. 5. Who oversees the organization’s activities? SUMAE has fundamental organs designed for effective oversight and management and sharing of experience. The key stakeholders include;  General Assembly  Board of Directors and  Special Committees.  The general Public 8. Does SUMAE belong to any sect in Uganda or elsewhere? No. SUMAE is an independent organization and its name implies [that] the organization is mass oriented organization, which is open to the entire nation (Ummah). 9. What are the criteria of membership? Membership to the organization is open to all national and international organizations, institutions, community based organizations and individuals who subscribe to the vision, mission, values, principles and the code of conduct of SUMAE and or support and participate in programs of the organization. Membership shall be categorised into: i. Individual membership ii. Honorary membership iii. Corporate membership iv. Associate membership INDIVIDUAL (ORDINARY) MEMBERSHIP: This membership category is by registration and comprises of individuals over the age of 18 years. He/she shall be an active member entitled to all rights and privileges and subject to all obligations. The lifetime membership fee is SHS 55000. HONORARY MEMBERSHIP: Admission will be by invitation by the Board of Directors subject to approval by the General Assembly based on: I. Demonstrate interests, merits, and support the organization sector’s work; II. Commitment and indication to quality of life transformation of the residents; III. High esteem in organization IV. Ability to promote the organization’s image in and outside the nation; V. This membership category is by invitation only and comprises of Heads of State, Heads of Government and Heads of International Organization(s). Currently there are no honorary members yet; but this’ fairly based on the fact that since we’re just
  • 5. legitimately a new-born-baby then… but soon by Allah’s Will, thus shall it so happen. The annual membership fee is SHS 1,500,000. CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP: This membership category is by invitation only and comprises of prominent business leaders, academicians, and heads of regional organizations and representatives of the non- governmental organizations, institutions which subscribe to the interests and values of the organization and willing to participate or support the activities of the organization. The annual subscription fee is SHS 1000,000. ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP This membership category is by registration and comprises of corporations, industrial, Students, student organizations, Clubs non-governmental organizations and similar bodies. Members in this category shall have no vote. The annual subscription fee is SHS 500,000. RIGHTS of MEMBERS The rights of a member could be summarized as; 1. To be respected and recognized. 2. To receive orientations and training for the job he/she is assigned to do. 3. To be given guidance and direction. 4. To elect committee members or to be elected to elective positions. 5. To be given appropriate and well defined assignments in the organization and on the team. 6. To be kept informed. A member should always ask him/herself what he (she) can contribute towards the achievement of the organization’s Aims and Objective. 7. The liability of membership is un limited.
