What I need to know
10. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able
to:
Identify different types of PPE and their uses
Demonstrate the correct way to put on and take
off PPE
Understand the importance of PPE in caregiving
11. What is in
What is Personal Protective
Equipment?
commonly referred to as “PPE”, is
equipment worn to minimize
exposure to hazards that cause
serious workplace injuries and
illnesses.
12. What is it
Use of Personal Protective
Equipment
•Caregivers should religiously abide
by the following to prevent biological
hazards from happening.
13. What is it
Surgical Gown
•It protects a
caregiver’s clothing
and skin from
contamination.
14. What is it
Surgical Gown •Note:
•Outside of the gown is
considered
contaminated, this
should not be touched
when it is removed. A
wet gown is considered
contaminated also.
15. What is it
Surgical Apron
•In case the gown is
not available, apron
should be worn to
mask clothing during
client contact.
16. What is it
Medical Mask
It is used to protect the
caregiver from inhaling
infectious agents.
It is used to avoid
droplets of saliva from
reaching other people.
17. What is it
Medical Mask •Note:
•A wet mask is
considered
contaminated. The
front of the mask is
also contaminated.
Masks should not be
worn around neck.
18. What is it
Respirator It is used to in more high-
risk situations where
airborne infections may be
present.
It filter out harmful
particles from the air
before they can be
inhaled.
19. What is it
Surgical Gloves
•These are used to
protect the hands from
exposure to harmful
substances and from
contamination.
• When a caregiver has
open wound on the
hands, it is a must that
he/she use gloves.
20. What is it
Surgical Gloves •Note:
•The outside of the
gloves should not be
touched when
removed as this is
considered
contaminated.
21. What is it
Safety Goggles
•Intended to shield the
caregiver’s eyes from
impact hazards such
as flying fragments,
objects, large chips,
and particles.
22. What is it
Safety Goggles •Note:
•Goggles fit the face
immediately surrounding
the eyes and form a
protective seal around the
eyes. This prevents
objects from entering
under or around the
goggles.
24. Donning of PPE
1. Perform Hand Hygiene: This is the first step
