Greece is located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is covered by mountains, which make up three-fourths of mainland Greece, and has a very jagged coastline with around 2,000 islands. Greece has seas on three sides: the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean. The ancient Greeks developed their own alphabet and held the first Olympic games in a valley near Elis, where athletes competed in footraces. Greece offers beautiful scenery for hiking, swimming, and seeing spectacular ancient sites.
