Asturias is an autonomous community located in northern Spain known for its green and rugged landscapes. It has a long history dating back to Roman times and was an important center of resistance against the Muslims. Today, Asturias is famous for foods like fabada and sidra, as well as tourist attractions along its coast and in the Picos de Europa mountains. While the economy was traditionally based on mining and industry, it now relies more on services and tourism. Famous Asturians include Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso and Queen Letizia.

The greenness of Asturias is astounding, our well-preserved coastal and inland landscape with 7 natural areas that have been named Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO. That means that the 40% of our territory is a natural protected area.
Asturias is also a cultural treasure, with a collection of Pre-Romanesque Asturian monuments that have been added to the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
Also included are 5 prehistoric caves that preserve paintings from thousands of years ago, which form part of UNESCO’s list under the heading Cantabrian Rock Art.
What’s more, the Northern Way of the Way of Saint James, the great hiking and pilgrimage route, crosses through our medieval cities of Oviedo, Gijón, and Avilés.
