Quito is located in the Andes mountains of Ecuador at an altitude of 2,850 meters. It was founded in 1534 by Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Benalcázar and served as Ecuador's capital. Quito has a well-preserved colonial center that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The city offers historic sites, parks, museums, restaurants, and access to outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains and cloud forests.
