Aviles, Spain has a history dating back to prehistoric times. It was later conquered by the Romans and became an important harbor during the Middle Ages for its trade. In the 19th century, the French destroyed parts of Aviles. Today, Aviles has preserved its historic old quarter while also becoming a modern city. Two notable landmarks are Valdecarzana Palace, the oldest civil building from the 14th century located on Ferreria Street, and Ferreria Street itself, once known as Rua Nueva and home to many blacksmiths in earlier times.
