Bike Rectifier
 The rectifier
regulator converts
AC power to DC
allowing the
alternator to charge
the battery, and
controls the amount
of power delivered
to the battery.
DC And AC
 DC
Direct current is one-directional
flow of electric charge. An
electrochemical cell is a prime
example of DC power.
AC
AC stands for alternating
current and it refers to how
electrons are moving in an
alternating direction in a
conductor.
Diode
 A diode is a two-terminal
electronic component that
conducts current primarily in
one direction.
 Some of their most common
applications include turning AC
to DC, isolating signals from a
supply, and mixing signals.
 Silicon diodes have a forward
voltage of approximately 0.7
volts. Germanium diodes have
a forward voltage of
approximately 0.3 volts.
Bridge Rectifiers
 bridge rectifiers as a type of
full-wave rectifier that uses
four or more diodes.
 A bridge circuit configuration
to efficiently convert
alternating (AC) current to a
direct (DC) current.
Zener Diode
 A Zener diode is a silicon
semiconductor device that
permits current to flow in
either a forward or reverse
direction.
 A Zener diode operates just
like a normal diode when it
is forward-biased. However,
a small leakage current
flows through the diode
when connected in reverse
biased mode.
Register
 A resistor is a passive two-terminal
electrical component that implements
electrical resistance as a circuit
element.
 Resistors can also be used to provide a
specific voltage for an active device
such as a transistor.
Capacitor
 A capacitor is a device that stores
electrical energy in an electric
field. It is a passive electronic
component with two terminals.
 A capacitor works on the principle
that the capacitance of a conductor
increases appreciably when an
earthed conductor is brought near
it.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Diode
 It functions as rectifier in order to convert
alternating current into direct current.
 It is used to suppress voltage spikes. Moreover it
is used to protect electronic components which are
vulnerable to reverse voltages.
 It is fast in operation and does not require any
warm up time.
 It is very cheap compare to vacuum tube.
 Semiconductor diode does not generate any
current when voltage is not applied.
 It operates at low voltage and hence it consumes
less power.
 It is smaller in size and light in weight.
 It has long life.
 Semiconductor diode can not withstand very high
reverse voltage.
 It offers poor response.
 It has reverse saturation current.
 Noise level is high in semiconductor device at
high frequencies.
 Different diodes have unique benefits and
drawbacks and hence refer individual advantages
and disadvantages of respective diode.
Advantages and Disadvantages of B.R
 It can be used in application
floating output terminals, no
output terminal is grounded
 Transformer utilization factor,
in case of the bridge rectifier,
is higher than that of a center
tap rectifier.
 If stepping up or stepping
down of the AC voltage is not
needed, and it does not even
require any transformer.
 For high voltage applications,
bridge rectifier preferred,
because it has high peak
inverse voltage.
 In this type, two extra diodes are
used. So it requires four
semiconducting didoes.
 Two diodes in series conduct at a
time on alternate half-cycles.
This creates a problem when low
DC voltages are required. This
leads to poor voltage regulation.
 Internal resistance voltage drop
is twice than that of the center
tap circuit.
 If stepping up or stepping down
of voltage is not needed, we may
even do without a transformer.
BT151(SCR)
 The SCR is a three-terminal
thyristor that acts like a silicon
rectifier diode whose conductor
is controlled by an input
current.
 BT151 is a medium power 12A
silicon-controlled rectifier that
comes in a TO-220 package
that can be used to switch
medium power AC/DC loads
and can handle high DC pulses.
