Ear infections, also known as otitis media, stand out as
the most common reason for sick children to visit the
doctor in the United States. They occur when a blockage
in one or both of the Eustachian tubes, a structure in the
middle ear, prevents the normal flow of air.

3. Otitis Media
• This results in improper equalization of pressure in the
middle ear and the subsequent drawing of fluid into the
middle ear, where bacteria or viruses then settle in and
replicate.
Because children's Eustachian tubes are not fully
developed and thus particularly prone to closure,
children are particularly apt to developing chronic ear
infections. Such persistent blockages cause the mucous
secretions to thicken and further inhibit drainage, while
also leaving patients susceptible to more acute infection.
If the condition persists, the continuing negative
pressure or pressure changes can cause eardrum
deformities and damage to their hearing.
