The treatment of pediatric ear infections is dependent upon
the type, duration, and history. Many such infections stem
from a viral cause and resolve on their own within one to two
weeks, though symptom improvement typically begins in only
a few days. Physicians most often recommend this
observation and home care approach for children with mild
discomfort for 48 hours or less.
Physicians may also advise that patients supplement a
watchful waiting approach with home therapies for pain
control.

3. Childhood Ear Infections
 These often include a warm compress over the affected area, or the
use of age-appropriate medications sold over the counter.
Children with more severe or longer-lasting pain in the ear may be
suffering from a bacterial infection, which may require antibiotic
therapy. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that such
therapies be used prudently, as over-prescription of antibiotics may
lead to resistance. The academy recommends that physicians wait
to prescribe antibiotics until symptoms have gone unresolved for 48
to 72 hours, unless the child is under the age of 2 and experiencing
severe symptoms.
If ear infections recur more than three times in six months or four
times in a year, a pediatrician may recommend the introduction of
tympoanostomy tubes. Some remain in the ear for up to a year and
then fall out, while others last longer and require surgical removal,
though all serve to improve fluid drainage from the ear and thus
reduce a child's risk of infection.
