3. The story takes place on Christmas Eve. Della is
desperate to find the perfect gift for Jim but can only
afford $1.87. She decides to sell her most prized
possession, her beautiful long hair, to a hairdresser
for $20. With the money, she hopes to buy Jim a
meaningful gift.

4. Meanwhile, Jim is also struggling to find a gift for Della. He has a cherished pocket
watch that has been passed down through his family for generations. He decides to sell
it to a watch dealer to buya gift for Della.
On Christmas Eve, Della anxiously waits for Jim to come home. When he arrives,
she reveals her short hair, which shocks Jim at first. However, he quickly reassures her
that her hair will grow back and that he loves her no matter what.

5. Della then presents Jim with the gift she bought: a set of beautiful platinum watch
fobs for his beloved pocket watch. Jim, in turn, presents Della with her gift: a set of
expensive combs for her hair. It is then that they realize the irony of their gifts - Della has
sold her hair to buy a gift for Jim's watch, while Jim has sold his watch to buy a gift for
Della's hair.
Despite their sacrifices, they both understand the true meaning of love and
selflessness. They realize that the value of their gifts lies not in their material worth but in
the love and thoughtfulness behind them.
