Castle defenses included a portcullis to block the entrance, murder holes above the gate to drop objects on attackers, and arrow loops that allowed defenders to fire arrows safely. Attackers used battering rams to break walls and trebuchets or catapults to launch projectiles. Additional defenses were crenels and merlons in battlements, garderobes that emptied waste outside the walls, moats filled with water, and turrets for looking out.
