A marketplace, a search engine and a bank,
all in one.
One can think of it as a mix of Amazon.com,
eBay and Paypal.

Unlike Amazon, which buys goods from suppliers and sells
them to customers, Alibaba has always acted as a
middleman, connecting buyers and sellers and facilitating
transactions between them.
Unlike eBay, Alibaba does not charge listing fees.
Instead it makes most of its revenue from
advertising on its various sites.
For the Gold Member Ship fee
1. Members from China mainland, Hongkong,
Taiwan, Macaw, the annual fee is 29800 RMB
2. Members outside China, the annual fee is
2999 USD.
According to its latest filing with US regulators, 279
million active buyers and 8.5 million active sellers use
Alibaba's online services every year and 14.5 billion
annual orders are made. So it's not hard to see
why advertisers find the websites so
appealing.
