According to a recent Kellogg Foundation report, if an organization builds a culture that systematically supports innovation, the ideas will come. The key is to be deliberate, open to ideas from anywhere, comfortable with unpredictability, and generous in sharing learnings – all great approaches to building a social infrastructure for youth organizing and engagement in Ontario. Young people are already making significant contributions to their communities, and now is the time to sustain and increase that activity.
In March 2009, OTF partnered with the Laidlaw Foundation and Tides Canada to create the conditions that would allow youth-led and youth-serving organizations to connect with each other, share resources and develop new knowledge and practices. 50 young people from diverse sectors and groups agreed on the need for a coordinated provincial model, but where they go from there is deliberately unplanned. No required changes have been identified up front, and no expected outcomes have been proposed. The only certainty is that a strong foundation is being built for future generations. Work through a fascinating case study on this unique process to find out more about:
- the five stages of intentional innovation;
- thinking big and trusting to “wisdom of crowds”;
- the definition of a social infrastructure; and
- the kind of supports needed by youth to strengthen their work

Of the numerous problem-solving methods available, this presentation examines solution-based "design thinking" in the learning context. Through research and case studies, the presentation will delve into the spatial features that successfully foster a problem-solving learning environment. In recent years, many institutions have created Colaboratories, including the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Innovation Lab, and Stanford d:school. The purpose of which is to investigate problems such as climate change, health care, sustainability, economic globalization, learning equity, business growth and entrepreneurship. This presentation will explain the reasons why the problem-solving environment of a Collaboratory can become a learning opportunity in Higher-Education and K-12 applications and, the reason for its proliferation among corporations, organizations and institutions.

The objective of this interactive learning experience is to empower participants with easy-to-use tools that will help them quickly define their value, tell their story, and enroll partners, funders, and volunteers in accomplishing their respective missions. Outcomes will include the ability to bring leaders together for a different conversation than they've ever had before - one that recruits the right people capable of and motivated to take action - and ultimately leads to accelerated collaboration and innovation.

As the proliferation of digital technologies and access to information continues to invite different ways of thinking, learning today is influenced by the ever-evolving, interconnected complex systems. While these systems have the potential to expand the ecologies of teaching and learning, many students and teachers have yet to tap into their richness. This session explores how connectivism and networked learning might be used to enhance the teaching and learning of first-year writing. I seek to demonstrate how personal technology, Open Educational Resources, and cloud-based computing could be integrated into the curriculum to cultivate interactive, self-directed learning. I will also consider the teacher’s role in facilitating the networked learning process, helping students to situate themselves within the complex relationships of technologies and discourse communities. I hope this creates an open forum to discuss the embedded rhetorics in technology, as well as to explore methodologies for research in the realm of connectivism.

Election 2012: A Battle of the Social MediaJason Tham
About a decade ago, the hottest thing in political campaign was the Internet (Garecht, 2011). Political consultants and candidates touted the promise of the Web to change the mode of their campaign strategies. From fundraising to propagandizing, web-based campaigning overwhelmed the medium with political messages. Yet, with the sudden hype of Web 2.0 over the past few years, social media became the new hot medium for political campaigning. As the election season approaches, we are seeing an increasing amount of political messages streaming into social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Due to this trend, political parties are spending millions of dollars hiring social media experts to manage and monitor their appearances and respective messages on SNS. Nonetheless, how effective are SNS acting as a new medium for the transmission of these propaganda messages? Do SNS audience receive firsthand information from their political leaders, or through a group of active gatekeepers who screen information and only pass on items that would help others share their views on these sites (Baran & Davis, 2009)? According to an analysis of voters’ decision-making process during a 1940 presidential election campaign, Paul Lazersfeld and his team of researchers revealed evidence suggesting that the flow of mass communication is less direct than we supposed. Known as opinion leaders, this group of active gatekeepers maintains an important role in consuming and filtering propaganda messages on SNS. Drawing from the two-step flow theory of communication process, this study aims to identify opinion leaders within the realm of SNS, their influence toward the electoral progress, and determines if SNS are an effective medium for the generation, replication, and dissemination of political messages.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students.
