Film Production
company case study
By Bethany Bouchareb
20th Century Fox
• One of the six major American film studios
• Founded on May 31st 1935
• A vertical integrated company- a production company, a
distribution company, owns radio stations, owns television
channels and programs, owns a music label
• Also known as Fox, Twentieth Century Fox Film
Corporation,20th Century Fox Pictures
• Fox Searchlight Pictures is a smaller sister company of 20th
Century Fox, it specializes in independent films and British
films
The Devil Wears Prada
• Released in 2006
• Production company: Fox 2000 Pictures
• Runtime: 109 minutes
• Cast: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci
• Production budget: $35,000,000
• Worldwide Box Office Gross: $326,551,094
• Worldwide Box Office Profit: $291,551,094
• Rated pg-13
• Director- David Frankel
• Distributor- Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
• Exhibited Worldwide (e.g. USA, UK, Netherlands, Brazil,
Germany, Philippines, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Ukraine,
France etc…)
• Was shot on film, not digitally
• Based on a best selling book
‘Prada’ immediately attracts
a target audience of women
because the title was
carefully considered, the film
is based on fashion and
automatically strikes a
woman’s appeal
The high heel shoe
on the front targets
women as it is linked
with fashion and
predominantly
feminine women
wear them, also the
shoe connotes that it
is about fashion
The main cast has
been placed up the
top and it just so
happens that the
cast displayed are
very well known
celebrities, which
may make an
audience want to go
to see the film for its
a list cast
The Poster
Due to the image
being a high heel the
consumers connotes
the ‘devil’ to be a
woman, the trident
then represents this
woman to be evil and
tormenting, already
introducing the evil
character following
propps theory to the
audience
The color of this shoe is red, representing danger/evil to the audience
introducing a disequilibrium to the story, however red also means passion
which could represent the peoples passion for fashion in this film
The Trailer
The trailer of The Devil Wears Prada focuses on the element of fashion
which appeals to women, also it differs from other comedy trailers as
it doesn’t just show a comedy element, it describes the storyline and
doesn’t just show the comedy elements, this intrigues an audience as
it informs them what the movie is actually about, a good way of
marketing. However comedic moments are shown that don’t overly
contribute to the narrative, and this displays the element of comedy
In this comedy/ drama/ romance film. You see quite a lot in this trailer
as I’ve already noted as it shows the narrative of the film as opposed
to just the comedic elements which express the comedy genre. The
trailer makes you want to see the film as it is explanatory to a certain
extent, however it does not show how Andy will deal with situation
and how it will end (an enigma code), this makes the audience want
to watch the film.
Exhibition
• The Devil Wears Prada was exhibited
in cinema in 2006
• The Devil Wears Prada was available
on DVD as of the 5th of February 2007
• The Devil Wears Prada is available on
blu-ray
• The Devil Wears Prada is available on
Amazon Instant Video
The Devil Wears Prada was widely
exhibited and this is beneficial as it gains
more money as there are more things to
watch the film off therefore it is more
likely to be watched.
Other films by 20th Century Fox
• The other woman: The Other Woman is a 20th century fox film
that is yet to be released, however it is a film following the
same genre as The Devil Wears Prada
• Avatar: Avatar was produced by Twentieth Century Fox Film
Corporation and it was distributed by Twentieth Century Fox
Film Corporation, however the genre differs with Avatar as it is
Action/ Adventure/ Fantasy
• Rio: Rio was produced by Twentieth Century Fox Animation
and it was distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Film
Corporation, however it follows the genre of Adventure/
Animation/ Comedy
• It is evident that 20th Century Fox do not stick to one genre
and that is in fact varied
