2. • In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products
I have used, the following conventions relating to mystery drama trailers:
• A surprising and unexpected discovery at the start of the film, which asks as many questions as it answers.
• Creating suspense at the end of the trailer with a vague lead that Georgina had ‘gone overseas’, leaving the audience to wonder what happens next.
• Background music which changes from gentle and soothing before the discovery of the letter to more intense and unsettling music.
• Captions cut in between the live action clips to give more clues to the story
• A convention in trailers is to have lots of very short action clips. I have used this convention in my London scenes,
• But I have challenged the short clips convention at the start and end of my trailer with two slightly longer scenes which set the scene of the story. The first scene shows the
discovery of the letter which is key to the story and the tension and then at the end of the trailer there is the brief scene where she discovers that the person she is searching for
has gone overseas.
• Lily’s expression when she is on the train and travelling around London gives a connotation that she is quite calm, whereas convention might indicate that she should show
outward signs of being upset.
• One of the conventions relating to dramas that I have developed is that of a teenager being head-strong. Instead of confronting the woman she always thought was her mother,
she takes matters into her own hands and goes off on a search.

4. How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
• The viewer isn’t told who Georgina is, but the connotation of the letter is that
she is a friend or possibly a sister of Jenny, challenging the convention in films
that the natural mothers of adopted children are usually from poor backgrounds.
Lily appears to have been brought up in a wealthy family as connoted by the
fact that she is about to go on a skiing holiday. She is clearly resourceful and
independent (by going on the search on her own) which represents this social
group in this way, but it is also a representation of teenagers as being
independent and wanting to do things for themselves. When in London there
are shots of lots of people in a hurry which represents Londoners as being
people who are always busy.

5. What kind of media institution might distribute
your media product and why? (Institutions)
• I have made a 2 minute trailer to a full length feature film. I would try to get
film distribution companies like Working Title, or Utd Pictures to distribute my
film in cinemas and by DVD. I would also approach streaming companies like
Netflix, Amazon Prime and Sky-go to try to get it put on, On Demand and TV
companies like BBC and Channel 4.

6. Who would be the audience for your media
product? (Audience analysis)
• The target audience would mainly be young adults and female
adults but I would expect it to have quite a wide appeal as
mystery films can attract a wide range of adults. The class which
it would most appeal to is rising, which is Affluent Urbanites in
town and city areas, Prosperous Professionals in metropolitan
areas and Better-Off Executives in inner city areas.

7. How did you attract/address you audience?
In making my film I have learnt a lot about different camera angles and how to shoot a two
minute trailer. In my opening sequence I had some medium shots, close ups shots,
tracking shots. For making my film I used a canon 700d camera to film it. I used a voice
recording machine which I learned how to use for part of my film. I filmed my film in
London which was one of my locations.
The trailer creates tension by showing the discovery at the start of the film and creates
suspense at the end of the trailer with a vague lead that the target of Lily’s search has
‘gone overseas’, leaving the audience to wonder what happens next. I also hope to
capture the interest of the audience with lots of very short clips showing Lily passing iconic
London landmarks.

8. What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing this product?
• Looking back at my preliminary task I feel my opening sequence
has process and it is much better than my preliminary task. I
used different camera angles and learned how to edit a film. My
brief for the preliminary task is for someone to walk into a room,
reacting a door and opening it and then entering a room and
then they say some lines. I learned how to do a shot reverse
shot, 180 degree rule and a match on action shot
