CAR Region Consists of Six
Provinces
1. Abra
2. Apayao
3. Benguet
4. Ifugao
5. Kalinga
6. Mt. Province
FUN FACTS
Act No. 1876 of the Philippine Commission
Amburayan, Apayao, Benguet, Bontoc, Ifugao
Kalinga and Lepanto.
Eight years later and under Act No. 2772 –
Benguet, Ifugao, Bontoc and Kalinga Apayao.
Executive Order No. 220 on July 15, 1987 -
Creating a Cordillera Administrative Region,
appropriating funds therefor and for other
purposes.
GEOGRAPHY
Area – 19,294 kilometers
(7,449.50 square miles)
Population – 1,520,743
Municipalities – 75
Barangays – 1,176
ABRA - BANGUED
HISTORY
The Spanish word “abra” means “gorge, beach,
pass, or dale”
In 1972, Abra was included in the Ilocos
Region by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1
In 1987, Abra was included in the newly
created the Cordillera Administrative Region.

APAYAO
HISTORY
Filipino – American War broke out in 1899.
RA No. 4695 – June 18, 1966 An Act Creating
the Provinces of Benguet, Mountain Province,
Ifugao and Kalinga-Apayao
RA No. 7878 – Feb 14, 1995 The sub-provinces
of Kalinga and Apayao are hereby converted
into regular provinces, to be known as the
Province of Kalinga and the Province of
Apayao.
GEOGRAPHY
Population – 103,633
Area – 4,351.23 kilometers
Barangays – 133
Municipalities – 7
Major Industries – Livestock and poultry
breeding
BENGUET – LA TRINIDAD
HISTORY
The mountainous area now covered by Benguet
is home to several native tribes which are
known as the Igorot.
World War II – Igorot guerillas and American
forces.
On June 18, 1966 – Mountain Province was
split into four provinces with the enactment
of RA No. 4695.
GEOGRAPHY
Population – 372,533
Area – 2,826.59 kilometers
Barangay – 140
Municipalities – 17
Major Industry – Agriculture, Mining and
Tourism
IFUGAO - LAGAWE
HISTORY
It is named after the term “i-pugo” which
means “I” (from/people) and “pugo” (hill),
thus people of the hill.
During the Spanish regime, the Spaniards
confined their activities to Kiangan.
In 1905, Ifugao was made a sub-province of
the old Mountain Province.

Population – 180,711
Area – 2,628.20 kilometers
Barangay – 175
Municipalities – 11
Major Industry - Rice
KALINGA - TABUK
HISTORY
Is a landlocked province of the Philippines
in the Cordillera Administrative Region in
Luzon.
Prior to 1995, Kalinga and Apayao used to be
a single province named Kalinga-Apayao.
The name Kalinga is derived from the Ibanag
and Gaddang word which means “head hunters”
GEOGRAPHY
Population – 182,326
Area – 3,231.30 kilometers
Barangays – 152
Municipalities – 7
Major Industries – Building Rice Terraces and
Pottery
MT. PROVINCE - BONTOC
HISTORY
Mountain Province became a special province
of the Philippines in 1907.
It became an independent province on March
25, 1967.
This old province was established by the
Americans in 1908
GEOGRAPHY
Population – 148,661
Area – 2,097.30 kilometers
Barangays – 144
Municipalities – 10
Major Industries – Various woven materials
like knapsacks, bags, purses, etc.
FAMOUS TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
HANGING COFFINS
The position of the
coffins showed how
much loved ones cared
for the departed –
the higher the
coffin, the more
valued the person
was. The Sagada
hanging coffins are
not for everyone.
This ancient burial
tradition was only
given to those who
SUMAGUING CAVE
The Sumaguing Cave is
the biggest one in
Sagada. The rock
formations that
resemble common forms
are the highlight of
this incredible
adventure. The bird
and elephants, the
tortoise and
chocolate cake are
some of these
formations. There is
MT. PULAG
Mount Pulag is third
highest next to Mount
Apo and Mount Dulang-
dulang. c. 2000 BC by
the native Ibalois.
Mount Pulag is famous
for its "sea of
clouds" and its
exceptional view of
the Milky Way Galaxy
at dawn, which has
attracted many
tourists who wish to
KABAYAN CAVE
The Kabayan mummy
burial caves are
officially proclaimed
Philippine National
Cultural Treasures
pursuant to
Presidential Decree No.
374 which has to be
preserved protected and
maintain for future
generations as a
manifestation of the
skills and ingenuity
BATAD RICE TERRACES
Located in Brangay
Batad in the
municipality of
Banaue is the famed
rice terraces that
resemble an
enormous
amphitheater — the
Batad Rice
Terraces. It is one
of the 5 clusters
of rice terraces
listed as a UNESCO
CHICO RIVER
The Chico River
is a river system
in the
Philippines in
the island of
Luzon,
encompassing the
regions of
Cordillera and
Cagayan Valley.
BURNHAM PARK
Burnham Park, officially known as the Burnham
Park Reservation, is a historic urban park
located in downtown Baguio, Philippines. It was
designed by eponymous American architect and
Baguio city planner, Daniel Burnham.
HERITAGE HILL AND NATURE PARK
The Dominican Hill
Retreat House, also
commonly known as
the Diplomat Hotel,
is an abandoned
structure atop
Dominican Hill,
Baguio, Philippines.
It is now undergoing
rehabilitation
through the efforts
of the city
government.
