Employments:
I started my career as a Translator and Field Worker for one year in a psychosocial
organization (UNITED SIKHS). It is about Trauma Outreach and Prevention Program
collaborated with Mental Health Unit. I was able to manage mental health experts from an
international non-government organization (Meaningful World) http://meaningfulworld.com/
I was the Eastern Regional Coordinator for an international organization Kinder Not Hilfe for
five years, on community development projects where I got the opportunity to work with
different ethnic partners from Sri Lanka. It was a good opportunity to set up a community level
national peace network to carry out peace building and reconciliation work from bottom up.
I was a Business Counsellor and Developer with CEFE Sri Lanka for one year, conducted
business management training for twenty war widows on food processing. I have helped them to
get bank loan approvals to start up micro businesses. These women then became economically
self-sufficient. Through this process, I have assisted in identifying opportunities for these women
to develop their skills in economic development. The business coaching program was supported
by the international agency GIZ.
I was a Program Manager at UHP (Unleashing Human Potential) http://uhpsl.org for two years
in a tourism mapping project with DAI/USAID and Eastern Provincial Council. The project was
ensured equitable economic growth for conflict affected communities within the tourism industry
by identifying gaps and opportunities in the market and income generating activities for farm
producers and trade associations in the Eastern Province and mitigated against potential conflict
among the multi-ethnic community. We presented the findings to key stakeholders in the region.
I was a District Coordinator in a disability project for one year at CBTD (Community Business
Technology Developers) www.cbtdsl.org, training government and NGOs in the Rights Based
Approach (RBA), creating awareness about disability issues and involved planning of a
disability program in the Eastern Province, in conjunction with the Social Service Department.
We have developed a RBA documentary film on disability for stakeholders and delivered an
induction program to governments in Sri Lanka on disability issues. We created an information
database relating to disability for CBTD, which assisted in inclusive program delivery.
Educations:
I was closely nursed and nurtured by Jesuit Priests and had my school education at St Michael’s
National College up to advance level. I have a Diploma in Psychosocial Work from the Eastern
University in Sri Lanka. I have completed Professional Development course at Chulalongkorn
University in Thailand. I have numerous qualifications in education gained through various
national and international organizations. I have completed modules include business coaching
and experiential learning methods. I have been well trained in bookkeeping, business plan and
organizational management through CEFE Net Sri Lanka.
Experiences:
I have extensive experience in working for the betterment of my community. I have worked with
war widows, people with disability, former child soldiers, government groups and aid agencies. I
have demonstrated a professional commitment to inclusive processes, through my work with war
widows and people with disability. As well as the work experience I have listed earlier.
I have been participating in monthly governmental and NGO coordination meetings and provide
input to local government reporting on disability and women issues. I collaborated with local and
rural organizations to implement government strategic strengthening programs. I have
experience in managing the financial matters of local organizations. I have experience in
preparing and delivering financial and progress reports.
I worked with women self-help groups and conducted awareness programs for them such as
advocacy on gender violence, integrated gender equality concerns and women’s rights. I
organized a women’s forum on behalf of these self-help groups, so they could discuss economic
and social problems with stakeholders. I developed a trainer manual on capacity building and
implemented to help illegal migrants, by strengthening community-based organizations and
providing small business projects for youth from the support of the International Organization
for Migration.
Expectations:
I would welcome the opportunity to be involved in a program that is committed to supporting the
youth, women and people with disability in my community enjoy an improved standard of living
through positive economic development. I believe in a united Sri Lanka and would like to be
involved in work that brings the people of the country together. I believe in motivating people to
find solutions for their own wellbeing. I would ideally like to be employed in a reputed
organization where I am able to put my knowledge and experience in practice. I need to educate
myself more and more to help others so I am looking for education scholarships.
Expertise:
I have extensive expertise in deliver a range of programs and trainings on community
development and business management. I am specializes in producing community development
and business mentoring trainers. I am an experienced negotiator and problem solver, both
personally and at a group level. I have proven ability to assist community members toward the
identification of issues and the mobilization of action-based solutions.
Extra skills:
I have excellent facilitation skills including the ability to facilitate community dialogues and
workshops. I have excellent lobbying skills, particularly on behalf of community groups,
effectively becoming a voice for the community. I have excellent financial skills, which have
been developed through my extensive experience working with NGOs and aid agencies, where I
have implemented complex projects with limited resources. I have developed analytical skills
relating to business plan development and management. I have developed strong problem-
solving skills to see results. I have a demonstrated ability to establish strong working
relationships with a range of government, industry, donor and community stakeholders.
I have excellent cross-cultural communication skills and developed through working with my
community, local, state and national governments and international aid and development
organizations. My oral and written communications skills extend beyond my fluency in Tamil, to
a very good level of spoken and written English and a good grasp of Singhalese. I am
comfortable communicating across these languages. I have a well-developed sense of empathy
and compassion, which is an essential part of having excellent communication skills. My ability
to communicate with a wide sector of the community has afforded me success in my work for
the benefit of my community. I work well independently and as part of a team.
