RESUME CHECKLIST
Creating a winning resume is an iterative process that takes time and effort. Resume writing is
more of an art than a science, i.e., there are different acceptable formats. The following
checklist was created to guide you through the more objective components of resume
preparation. Please check your resume against this list throughout the resume enhancement
process.
Format & Spacing
 Esthetically pleasing
 Resume not based on generic templates
 Good balance of text and whitespace
 Appropriate length (usually 1 page for students)
 Organized in a logical manner (information should support why candidate is right for the
position to which they are applying)
 Consistent margins and spacing
 Consistent headings
 Consistent date format
 Times New Roman or Arial font
 Consistent font size
 Font size between 10-12 pts (excluding name)
 No more than 2 font sizes (excluding name)
Typing, Grammar and Word Usage
 Free of typographical and grammatical errors
 Correct use of punctuation
 Correct capitalization
 Correct use of numbers – always use numerals, except when amounts are small and
unimpressive
 Correct use of verb tense
 Avoid use of abbreviations
 Avoid use of colloquialism and non-standard English – OK to use industry-specific
terminology
Resume Content - Heading & Contact Information
 Name clearly listed in bold and larger font
 Contact Information clearly listed
 Use of local address (address in which you want to work)
 Professional email address
 Clearly identifies the position sought
Resume Content - Skills
 Clear summary of skills
 Skills listed with accurate description of proficiency
 Clarifies why you are worth hiring
 Targeted for job type
 Sound like an insider
Resume Content - Education
 Education and degree(s) clearly listed in reverse chronological order
 Location of school(s)
 Include graduation date(s)/expected graduation date(s)
