The circulatory system consists of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems which are responsible for circulating blood, nutrients, hormones, oxygen and other gases to and from cells in the body. The heart is a hollow muscular organ located in the chest that acts as a pump. It has four chambers - two upper atria and two lower ventricles. The heart continually pumps blood through the cardiovascular system to deliver oxygenated blood to tissues and organs and deoxygenated blood to the lungs. Key terms introduced include stroke volume, end diastolic volume, end systolic volume, ejection fraction and cardiac output.
