Captchas and other challenge systems are intended to distinguish humans from computers, but current implementations are often too difficult for humans to solve. The documents discusses how early Captchas were simple tests that most people could pass, but modern Captchas are highly distorted text designed to defeat optical character recognition programs, making them difficult even for teenagers to decipher. While audio Captchas were created for those with vision impairments, they face similar understandability issues. The article argues that Captchas should return to being simple tests that are accessible to all users.
