Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia are located in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. Over 60 million years, soft layers of lava and ash erupted from volcanoes like Erciyes, Mount Hasan and Güllüdağ, covering the area and slowly eroding to form the whimsical fairy chimneys and caverns that Cappadocia is known for. The area has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and features landmarks like Eğri Minare, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Avanos, Göreme, Çavuşin and Ortahisar as well as the Ihlara Valley
