On April 23, 1920, Turkey established International Children's Day to emphasize the importance of children for the new nation. Turkey became a democratic republic on October 29, 1923 under the leadership of its founder and first president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Turkey has a rich cultural heritage visible through its mosques, palaces, archaeological sites, and cuisine.
