Canesten Cream (Generic Clotrimazole Cream) is
used to treat fungal skin infections such as
ringworm, athlete's foot, fungal nappy rash and
fungal sweat rash.
It is also used to relieve irritation of the vulva
(external thrush) or the end of the penis, which
may be associated with thrush.

Canesten Cream is manufactured by Bayer Zydus
Pharma Private Limited, India in the strength of 1%.

Chemical Structure

The active ingredient contained in Canesten
Cream is Clotrimazole.
Each gram Canesten Cream contains 10mg of
Clotrimazole.

Uses of Canesten 1% Cream 15g:
Clotrimazole topical preparations are used to treat fungus infections on
the skin. Canesten Antifungal Cream is used to treat fungal skin
infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, fungal nappy
rash and fungal sweat rash.
Canesten Cream (Generic Clotrimazole 1% Cream) is used for the
treatment of:
i. All dermatomycoses due to moulds and other fungi (e.g. Trichophyton
species)
ii. All dermatomycoses due to yeasts (Candida species). These include
ringworm (tinea) infections (e.g. athlete's foot), paronychia, pityriasis
versicolor, erythrasma and intertrigo.
iii. Skin diseases showing secondary infection with these fungi.
iv. Candidal nappy rash, vulvitis and balanitis.

How Does Canesten 1% Cream Work?:
Clotrimazole (Canesten Cream) acts primarily by damaging the
permeability barrier in the cell membrane of fungi.
Clotrimazole brings about inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis,
an essential constituent of fungal cell membranes.
If ergosterol synthesis is completely or partially inhibited, the
cell is no longer able to construct an intact cell membrane.
This leads to death of the fungus.

Recommended Adult Dosage
The dose of Canesten Cream (Generic Clotrimazole
Cream) is given below:
Gently massage sufficient Clotrimazole cream into the
affected and surrounding skin areas twice a day, in the
morning and evening. Use the cream on your skin only. A
strip of cream (0.5cm long) is enough to treat an area the
size of your hand. It is best to use it for at least 2 weeks,
even if all signs of the infection have gone, to stop it from
coming back. It can be used for up to 4 weeks if needed.

Contraindications

Canesten Cream is contraindicated in patients with a
known hypersensitivity to Clotrimazole or any
component of the cream.

Storage Instructions
Canesten Cream (Generic Clotrimazole Cream) have
to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from
20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions permitted
between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away from
children and pets.

Warnings
Canesten Cream (Generic Clotrimazole Cream) is not for ophthalmic use.
If irritation or sensitivity develops with the use of Clotrimazole cream,
treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.
This product contains cetostearyl alcohol, which may cause local skin
reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).
The patient should be advised to use the medication for the full
treatment time even though the symptoms may have improved. Notify
the physician if there is no improvement after four weeks of treatment.
The patient should inform the physician if the area of application shows
signs of increased irritation (redness, itching, burning, blistering, swelling,
oozing) indicative of possible sensitization.

Warnings
The patient should avoid the use of occlusive
wrappings or dressings.
The patient should avoid sources of infection or
reinfection.
Occlusive dressings should not be applied over
Canesten 1% topical cream unless directed by a
physician.

Possible Side Effects
Large scale clinical studies have shown Canesten Cream (Generic
Clotrimazole Cream) to be well tolerated after topical application.
The side effects of Canesten cream are given below:
Immune system disorders: allergic reaction (syncope, hypertension,
dyspnea, urticaria)
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: blisters, discomfort/pain,
edema, erythema, irritation, peeling/exfoliation, pruritus, rash,
stinging/burning.

Possible Side Effects
As with all medicines, some people may be allergic to Canesten
Cream (Generic Clotrimazole Cream).
If you or your baby are allergic, a reaction will occur soon after you
start using it. If you or your baby experience an allergic reaction,
stop using Canesten Cream and inform your doctor immediately or
contact the accident and emergency department of your nearest
hospital.
Signs of an allergic reaction may include: Rash, Swallowing or
breathing problems, Swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue,
Weakness, feeling dizzy or faint and Nausea.

Canesten Cream Overdosage
Acute overdosage with topical application of Clotrimazole Cream
is unlikely and would not be expected to lead to a life-
threatening situation. There is no specific antidote.
However, in the event of accidental oral ingestion, routine
measures such as gastric lavage should be performed only if
clinical symptoms of overdose become apparent (e.g. dizziness,
nausea or vomiting).
Gastric lavage should be carried out only if the airway can be
protected adequately.

Canesten 1% Cream During Pregnancy
Clotrimazole Cream (Canesten Cream) has been classified by the US
FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Clotrimazole is very poorly absorbed
following dermal application or intravaginal administration to humans.
In clinical trials, use of vaginally applied Clotrimazole in pregnant
women in their second and third trimesters has not been associated
with ill effects. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled
studies in pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Studies in pregnant rats with intravaginal doses up to 100 mg/kg have
revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus due to Clotrimazole. High
oral doses of Clotrimazole in rats and mice ranging from 50 to 120
mg/kg resulted in embroyotoxicity, impairment of mating, decreased
litter size and number of viable young and decreased pup survival to
weaning.

Canesten 1% Cream During Pregnancy
Because animal reproduction studies are not always
predictive of human response, this medicine should be
used only if clearly indicated during the first trimester of
pregnancy.
