Guidelines for Success, Fluency and Efficiency
S
2. Issuing Demerits – Classroom
Protocol
S Be sure that you follow the protocol of disciplinary
advancement PRIOR to issuing a demerit.
S First: Verbal warning
S Second: Instruct student(s) to place the Demerit card on his/her
desk
S Third: Issue Demerit
S Log the infraction.
S DO NOT use WHOLE CLASS WARNINGS as a practice. The
practice is generally unfair and does not individually target
student associated behavior(s).
3. Importance of Following Demerit
Issuance Protocol in Classroom
S Consistency of expectations with all students and
fairness
S Consistency of expectations with all AWMS families and
fairness
S Limited to NO fluctuation in expectations between
teachers, which offers predictable structure for students
S Consistency of disciplinary protocol as YOU ARE
REPRESENTED BY ADMINISTRATION
4. Referrals
S When is a referral necessary?
S The student(s) infraction is highly egregious toward the teacher
or another student.
S You MAY or MAY NOT have gone through the demerit issuance
cycle.
S The infraction is such that the student MUST be removed from
the class, as the presence of the student poses an obstruction
to the further delivery of instruction.
5. Referrals: Log Entries & Email
S ALL discipline AT or ABOVE the issuance of a demerit
MUST be logged.
S Components of a Log Entry
S What happened (May use Level indicator as a bridge to next
section).
S How what happened violates our disciplinary policy.
S What you did about it.
6. Referrals: Log Entries & Email
S Your Referral is led or followed by an informative email to
administration in this manner:
S Subject Line: REFERRAL (Student‟s Initials) or REF (Student‟s
Initials)
S Email Body: Students full name, explanation of offence and any
intervention(s) attempted.
S For efficiency, you can copy and paste some of this information into
the log entry.
S This information is important, as it is used as foundational
justification for any administrative discipline.
S It will most likely be copied into the administrative log entry as a
precursor to subsequent disciplinary information.
S Referral emails SHOULD be sent to Administration on the same day
of the infraction, and MUST arrive to Administration within 24 hours
of the infraction.
7. Try it with this scenario…
Joe comes to class with a fresh “fade” haircut that exposes
plenty of skin around the ears and back of the neck. During
SSR, Jennifer continues to stare and giggle. Finally she
can‟t resist and slaps Joe across the back of the head. It
can be classified as “The Slap Heard „Round the World!”
The whole class erupts in laughter… What discipline do you
administer? Please compose a log entry that effectively
reflects your discipline and next steps.
