Geospatial information is growing more ubiquitous with trends like crowdsourcing, volunteer mapping and community-based mapping
Singapore 3D Map for a Smart Nation
This presentation accompanied a joint keynote address given by AAM's Brian Nicholls and Singapore Land Authority's (SLA) Dr Victor Khoo at the Locate17 Conference. AAM and the SLA are working together to capture and deliver an accurate and up-to-date 3D digital map for the entire country of Singapore, providing the digital framework for Singapore's visionary Smart Nation program. This presentation outlines the processes and technologies used to create the 3D digital map and highlights the many applications stemming from it such as Property Management systems, Solar Potential Studies, the development of Driverless Vehicle systems and more (many yet to be discovered!).

We are excited to be holding our own GIS Day event on November 19th, 2014!
GIS Day is a global grassroots educational event that enables Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users and vendors to showcase real-world applications of GIS to schools, businesses, and the general public. Organizations that utilize GIS around the world participate by holding or sponsoring an event of their own.
The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. In 2005, more than 700 GIS Day events were held in 74 countries around the globe. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with inspiring the creation of GIS Day. He saw GIS Day as providing an opportunity for the world to learn about the uses of GIS in mapping geography, and what that mapping technology could provide. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.
Recognizing the power that GIS technology could provide for healthcare, eHealth Africa as an NGO organization stepped to the forefront of using GIS applications to track polio in Nigeria. Using GIS technology, eHealth is able to map out areas previously unreached during immunization campaigns. Once the area is mapped, much-needed polio vaccinations are able to be distributed and the polio epidemic is brought another step closer to being controlled and eliminated.
The theme of GIS Day is “Discovering the world through GIS.” GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society and around the world.
We are excited to take part in GIS Day 2014 on November 19th. We look forward to joining with our community partners in discussing GIS usage, and to take a close look at the exciting contributions GIS provides around our world.

Navigation Aid for Travelers using NavIC Receiver
In India, many navigation devices and applications are based on American GPS system originally known as GPS Global Positioning System which is the most accurate among all the navigation systems and serves the entire globe. The navigation and positioning applications would be at halt, experiences void and the whole infrastructure and organization based on GPS which are currently in use would be collapsed, if America denies access for GPS service. To fill the void and to overcome dependency, India has developed its own regional navigation system originally named as IRNSS Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System and later renamed as NavIC Navigation using Indian Constellation . In the near future all the applications based on GPS service are to be replaced with NavIC. Various attempts have been made to ease travelling across the globe. A number of applications and smart devices have been developed using GPS with different objectives. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop a smart portable device using NavIC receiver to assist in travel across India. Using the IRNSS receiver we will get the current location of the person and the person then need to select the destination location from a list of places via GUI. Our application will then direct the person to the destination giving the route map and travel distance. Open source spatial database for mobile devices

Web-service based Mobile Geospatial Application Development using Python
As the development of mobile technology keeps marching forward, a noticeable trend of integrating location- and orientation-aware sensors (i.e., GPS receiver, digital compass, and accelerometer) into today’s smartphones has significantly promoted the development of mobile Location Based Services (LBS). At the same time, geospatial information is increasingly recognized as the common denominator in both today’s “Web 2.0” peer-to-peer social network era and tomorrow’s “Web 4.0”. As a result, embracing the growing rich spatial resources and adopting them for the mobile geospatial application development is essential. However, considering the large amount spatial data for processing and the physical limitation of today’s mobile devices in relation to battery power, CPU speed and data storage etc., it is nearly impossible to accomplish all computation intensive tasks efficiently on the device itself. Therefore, client-server architecture is usually a preferred option where the mobile devices act as clients sending requests and receiving responses whilst the calculation modules are wrapped and delivered in the form of web services. In this case, on the server side, the geospatial applications can take advantages of the capability of a variety of spatial databases back-ends, including spatial indexing, searching and retrieving. There are now a variety of Python modules, libraries and open sources etc. available for fast constructing and deploying web services for mobile geospatial applications. This talk attempts to give an introduction on using Python for building RESTful web-services for mobile geospatial application development, including back-end spatial database access and spatial information retrieval.

The development of mobile communications and positioning technologies make possible more powerful location information services, and the enhancement of the positioning technologies continue to improve the quality of service. This special issue deals with recent advances in the study of geospatial and location information technologies and applications in a variety of fields.
