This document summarizes a study on rural women processing cassava in Doma Local Government Area of central Nigeria. The study found that 84% of respondents claimed there were no modern processing technologies recommended in the area. Women primarily used traditional processing methods, which are laborious, time-consuming and provide low yields. The study recommends that relevant authorities work with researchers to develop appropriate processing technologies tailored to the literacy levels and skills of processors. This would help minimize constraints and allow women to realize higher benefits from their cassava processing activities.

It explores whether technology widens or narrows socioeconomic gaps, and if it is a tool of de-colonization or re-colonization. A brief history shows how educational technology has evolved from top-down radio/TV programs to bottom-up tools like audio/video tapes to today's interactive internet and mobile technologies. However, developing nations still face challenges like limited resources, infrastructure, and local content that contribute to a "digital divide". The One Laptop Per Child project and potential of m-learning are also examined.

The objective of this paper is to report a case study of smart dairy farming in Ontario, Canada which is the future of food production and ways that advancements related to the Internet of Things (IoT). It is impacting upon agricultural practice in the form of smart farming. Smart farming is the practice of intelligent agricultural management based upon technological data gathering farm practice for the purpose of increased levels of quality, production, and environmental protection. This paper will illustrate one example whereby partnerships among the academic world, government agencies and local food producing communities in Canada are adapting innovative thinking and smart technologies to address the need to implement the more effective agricultural practice. Food From Thought is a Canadian research project, based upon high-tech information systems to produce enough food for a growing human population while sustaining the Earth’s ecosystems. The paper will outline how one dairy farmer in Ontario has been able to apply smart farming technologies to increase milk production while maintaining the health of his cattle and preserving the environment. The review of applications of smart farming in Ontario such as digital tracking for a cow, genomic testing, digitally signaled birth, sensor driven crop management and data driven dairy production also details in this article.

This study examined factors influencing adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) by small-scale farmers in Sudan's Gezira State. The study found that the most popular means of accessing agricultural information for farmers were non-ICT sources like print media, neighbors, and extension officers. Radio was the most widely used ICT, with 21.9% of farmers reporting use. Key challenges to ICT adoption included low education levels, low income, cultural influences, lack of ICT skills among researchers, and shortage of electricity and telecommunications infrastructure in rural areas. The study provides insight into how socioeconomic, cultural, technical, and infrastructure barriers impact small-scale farmers' ability to adopt and benefit from ICT for agricultural information.

Nigeria produces large amounts of cassava waste annually from processing cassava tubers into food. This waste poses environmental issues and a challenge to use. Scientists have developed an innovative process to rapidly dry cassava peels by grating, pressing moisture out, and pelletizing them. This reduces drying time from 3 days to 6 hours, allowing the waste to be used as animal feed. Tests found the pellets comparable in energy to grains but lower in protein. However, at lower cost than grains, the pellets could meet energy needs of millions of livestock. The pellets also supported growth of fungus for a biocontrol product, though at a lower rate than grains, but this is outweighed by the

The Food Safety Working Group (FSWG) in Vietnam was created in 2015 at the request of the Deputy Prime Minister to address food safety issues in the country. It brings together government agencies, ministries, and development partners to facilitate joint policy dialogue and improve food safety. Over eight years of operations led by different organizations, the FSWG has contributed to various initiatives. However, it faces challenges of diminished government participation over time and dependence on active members. Going forward, it will strengthen its operations by integrating under Vietnam's One Health Partnership framework to better engage stakeholders and achieve policy impacts.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots. To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs

This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints. That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source. The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal. The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata. This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr. The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

Potential breadfruit growing areas.
Breadfruit produces more food per area than other starchy staple crops suchs as corn, rice, and wheat, with fewer inputs of labor and materials, such as fertilizer. Myraid advantages to growing a tree crop vs a field crop.
Based on analysis of 94 varieties of breadfruit at the Breadfruit Institute, National Tropical Botanical Garden. Kahanu Garden, Hana, Maui. Protein levels comparable or better to other starchy staple crops, such as banana, cassava and sweet potato. Some varieties as good as rice and close to minimum levels provided by maize.
Potential breadfruit growing areas.
Breadfruit-based agroforestry system in Micronesia. Typical on hillsides. Studies report >100 useful plants, a 2000 year old system of sustainable agriculture. Important for watersheds.
