Jonas struggles with gaining painful memories as the Receiver but decides to release them and escape with Gabriel. Zebra is injured but finds confidence again through art class. Jimmy Valentine reforms his life as a safecracker and stays reformed to be with Annabel. All three characters overcome adversities in their stories.

2. The Giver: Jonas
 Jonas had many adversities. He was not able to see
color, and the memories he was getting gave him pain
of the real world.
 “ It’s the memories of the whole world,” he said. “
Before you, before me, before the previous Receiver,
and generations before him”, the old man said.

3. Jonas gets an idea of releasing
the memories he got, and
escaping the community with
Gabriel.

4. Zebra: Adam Zebrin
 “Zebra”, what his friends called him, was know as a
fast runner. With no sweat, but one accident made
him different. That one hill changed him.
 “ Never, never, never run down a hill so fast that you
can’t stop at the corner”, his mother warned him
again and again. His friends kept calling him Zebra
even after they all knew that the doctors said he will
never be able to run like that again.

5. Zebra meets John Wilson, who
wants to help him build back
his convince with an art class.
 “ Adam, you al; interested in art?”
 “No”
 “You ever try your hand at it?”
 “I’ve did drawing in class. I don’t like it.”
 “Well , just in case you change your mind,
I’m giving an art class in your school
during the summer.”

6. Retrieved Reformation: Jimmy
Valentine
 Jimmy Valentine was know as a safecracker who was
put into prison for robing in Springfield. As he is
going to be let out the next day, the warden tells him
to change his life when he gets out.
 “Now Valentine”, said the warden, “ you’ll go out in
the morning. Brace up, and make a man of yourself.
Your not a bad fellow at heart. Stop cracking safes,
and live straight”, said the warden. “ Me?”, said
Jimmy in surprise. “ Why, I never cracked a safe in
my life.” “Oh, no”, laughed the warden. “ Of course
not. Let’s see, now.

7. As Jimmy changes his life in
Elmore, he falls in love with
Annabel, the bankers daughter.
 When Agatha gets locked in the new safe, he has to chose
to leave her as Ralph D. Spencer, or save her as Jimmy
Valentine.
 “Can’t you do something Ralph?” Annabel said. Jimmy
threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt sleeves. With
that act Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy
Valentine took his place. “Get away from the door, all of
you, he commanded, shortly. In a deep and immovable, the
others watched him as if under his spell.

8. Charters Overcome Adversities
 Jonas: Got over his fear, and freed the memories into
the community. Then ran away and took Gabriel with
him.
 Zebra: His leg held in time, and got back his convince
from the art class. John Wilson became a very good
friend and teacher to him forever.
 Jimmy Valentine: Changed his life for him, and for
Annabel, Ben knew he had for good.
