Jonas’s Adversity
• Jonas was a 12 year old boy, in the Giver, who
  had many problems.
• His sister would tease about his differences.
• He was not able to tell the community about
certain things. He has a father who kills babies
  as a job.
• “Oh, look! Lily squealed in delight. Isnt he cute?
Look at how tiny he is! And he has funny eyes
  like yours, Jonas!”
Jonas’s Perseverance
• Jonas perseveres by embracing the
differences, learning about the real world
(animals, climates etc.), and releasing bad
  feelings on the community.
Zebra’s Adversity
• Zebra is a young boy.
• Zebra loves to run and one day, while running
down a steep hill he got hit by a dark figure.
• “Then,a year ago, racing down Franklin Avenue,
he had given himself a push and had begun to
turn into an eagle, when a huge rushing shadow
appeared in his line of vision and crashed into
him and plunged him into darkness from which
  he emerged very, very slowly……”
Zebra’s Perseverance
• Zebra persevered through friends, family,
  and patience.
• “Wait, what am I seeing here? Are you
able to move those fingers? I think so. The
  doctors said there was some
  improvement.”
Jimmy Valentine’s Adversity
• Jimmy Valentine was a thief just getting
out of jail, pardoned by a government
official, and trying to get on a good
  successful life.
• “Now, Valentine, said the warden, you’ll go
out un the morning. Brace up and make a
man yourself. You’re not a bad fellow at
heart. Stop cracking safes, and live
  straight.”
Jimmy Valentine’s Perseverance
• While in a new town, Jimmy Valentine saw
  a beautiful woman named Annabel
  Adams.
• “A young lady crossed the street. Passed
him at the corner, and entered a door over
which the sign The Elmore Bank. Jimmy
Valentine looked into her eyes, forgot what
he was, and became another man”
