Presented at ALA, Chicago, 6/30/13. VCU Libraries expanded our chat reference service in the spring of 2013, by adding in a text messaging option, and making it available whenever the library is open (24 hours a day, 5 days a week, and weekend hours). We included staff in the circulation department as well as librarians and staff in our research and instruction department, and we promoted this service to our patrons inside the building. We also chose to not restrict the type of questions we would answer. Result? Success!

Webinar: Measuring Program Outcomes: A Toolkit for Small Libraries-2016-05-04TechSoup
Public libraries offer vital services to the community that provide opportunities for education, lifelong learning, literacy, digital skills, workforce development, and youth development. In order to gain and retain funding, libraries should have data to support their stories of success and positive impact on the lives of community members. Outcome measurement is a process which provides libraries with data that can be used for advocacy, programming decisions, and planning, so the library can communicate clearly and make improvements to programs and services. Outcome measurement can be a big undertaking, but a new toolkit has been developed to help libraries easily and effectively survey patrons to learn the true impact of their programs.
This free webinar provides an overview of outcome measurement from Project Outcome, a new program from the Public Library Association, that provides simple tools so libraries can measure programs across seven common service areas.

A Fresh Set of Eyes: Successes and Challenges as a New Library ManagerHeather Martin-Detka
Presented at the Southern Alberta Library Conference (SALC). Saturday, March 3, 2018.
As a new manager I have had the opportunity over this last year to critically look at Taber Public Library (TPL) and to ask a lot of questions, which led to tweaks, updates, changes and additions. Some of these have worked well and others, admittedly, not so well. This presentation reflects upon some of those observations and changes, as well, as where TPL is headed with its upcoming needs assessment and plan of service.

Providing accessible content can be a costly and timeconsuming
activity for individual libraries who have a legal and
ethical duty to support their students who have disabilities. As
access to online content has grown and funding for support
diminished, libraries are increasingly looking to the benefits
of using their collective effort to assess accessibility of thirdparty
content and then work with publishers and other suppliers
to find solutions. The session will set the scene and provide
some case studies from UK universities that show how we
are supporting students with disabilities in their use of library
content. Libraries have been working individually and collectively
to raise the topic of accessibility with publishers and vendors,
many of whom have engaged with their
customers. In some cases quite simple changes to
publisher platforms can produce effective changes. In others
a much greater investment is needed. The speakers will use
their own experience to outline this topic which we hope will be
relevant to librarians, publishers, system vendors and others.
Librarian building blocks; or, how to make the ideal librarianDom Bortruex
"Librarian building blocks" will explore recent changes and needs in librarianship, introduce strategies for learning new skills, and inspire participants to implement these skills. This presentation is for a general audience and will cover skills for all libraries. To build the ideal librarian, we determined what skills and knowledge a contemporary librarian needs to succeed. Since job postings and MLIS curriculum reflect current, popular trends in librarianship, we developed a data harvesting Python script that gathered the data for more than 600 librarian job postings and MLIS curriculum content. Based on this data, we will present which skills are being taught and which skills need to be taught. The presentation will explore what these changes in technology and librarianship mean for current librarians and how they can stay up to date in the continuously evolving field of librarianship.
We welcome you to the [Word-A-Holic-Z GANG] of 5500+ students across the world. With a mission to change the way students mug-up words-lists, we have started this service of simplifying Vocabulary Learning.
English Language Learning has since time immemorial remains a passport to success. Mired however in traditional methods of pedantic and purist learning-has made mastering Power Vocab a thing which remains elusive for most learners of this language.
We at Word-A-Holic-Z, present to students the high frequency words (the favorites) of competitive exams in a simple to understand, mnemonic and picture based learning method, so as to increase retention and reduce the time required to master one individual word.
Each power word as per research requires up to 10+ revisions to master it perfectly. With our mnemonic based learning (provided proper visualization is done) we guarantee you can reduce revisions to 1-2 times (a 10X times better method). We strive saving a considerable amount of student's time which can be used for other activities.[Keeping in mind he/she has time-scarcity].
We in our endeavor seek the support of educationists, administrators, policy makers, curriculum developers, teachers, educators, assessment specialists and parents to prepare students for a successful life.
You may subscribe to our FB Page fb.com/wordaholicz to access entire word list or follow us through our website wordaholicz.wordpress.com

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
