CAT English An introduction
What is CAT English? CAT English is nothing else but a sum total of 4 individual Components Vocabulary Reading Comprehension Verbal Reasoning Grammar & Usage
Examples of various question types: An example of a Verbal Reasoning Question Directions for Question: The following question has a paragraph from which the last sentence has been deleted. From the given options, choose the one that completes the paragraph in the most appropriate way. The audiences for crosswords and sudoku, understandably, overlap greatly, but there are differences, too. A crossword attracts a more literary person, while sudoku appeals to a keenly logical mind. Some crossword enthusiasts turn up their noses at sudoku because they feel it lacks depth. A good crossword requires vocabulary, knowledge, mental flexibility and sometimes even a sense of humor to complete. It touches numerous areas of life and provides an "Aha!" or two along the way. ____________________. 1. Sudoku, on the other hand, is just a logical exercise, each one similar to the last. 2. Sudoku, incidentally, is growing faster in popularity than crosswords, even among the literati. 3. Sudoku, on the other hand, can be attempted and enjoyed even by children. 4. Sudoku, however, is not exciting in any sense of the term.
Examples of various question types: An example of an Usage Question Directions for question :For each of the sentences given below, choose the option, which, fits into the sentence, while making logical and grammatical sense. Q.1. Regrettably(A)/Regretfully(B) I have to decline you invitation. 2. I am drawn to the poetic, sensual(A)/sensuous(B) quality of her paintings. 3. He was besides(A)/beside(B) himself with rage when I had told him what I had done. 4. After brushing against a stationary(A)/stationery(B) truck my car turned turtle. 5. As the water began to rise over(A)/above(B) the danger mark, the signs of an imminent flood were clear 1. BAABA	2. AAABA	3. BBBAB	4. BBAAB An example of a Vocabulary Question Directions for questions :Fill in the blanks of the following sentences using the most appropriate words from the option given below. Q. Active involvement in Social issues evokes a _______ response in India, compared to the involvement in religious issues, that almost _______ the nation. 1. tepid-boils 2. lukewarm-electrifies 3. turbid-placates 4. apocryphal-stupefies
Examples of various question types: An example of a Reading Comprehension Question Directions for Question: Each of the passages given below is followed by a set of questions. Choose the best answer to each question. The painter is now free to paint anything he chooses. There are scarcely any forbidden subjects, and today everybody is prepared to admit that a painting of some fruit can be as important as a painting of a hero dying. The Impressionists did as much as anybody to win this previously unheard-of freedom for the artist. Yet, by the next generation, painters began to abandon the subject altogether, and began to paint abstract pictures. Today the majority of pictures painted are abstract…….Contd….. Q. When a culture is insecure, the painter chooses his subject on the basis of: 1. The prevalent style in the society of his time. 2. Its meaningfulness to the painter. 3. What is put in front of the easel. 4. Past experience and memory of the painter The above is just a sample illustration of the type of questions that appear in CAT. Since a Reading Comprehension takes up greater space, a complete passage could not be accommodated in the slide.
