Two-Dimensional Shapes
 What are the distinguishing attributes of
two-dimensional shapes including: circles,
triangles, squares, rectangles, rhombuses
and hexagons?
Math TEKS:
1.6 - Geometry and measurement. The student applies
mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-
dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop
generalizations about their properties. The student is expected
to:
 1.6D - Identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles,
triangles, rectangles, and squares, as special rectangles,
rhombuses, and hexagons and describe their attributes using
formal geometric language.
 1.6F - Compose two-dimensional shapes by joining two, three, or
four figures to produce a target shape in more than one way if
possible.
Technology TEKS (K-2)
1 - The student uses creative thinking and innovative processes to
construct knowledge and develop digital products. The student is
expected to:
 1A – Apply prior knowledge to develop new ideas, products, and
processes
 1D – Create and execute steps to accomplish a task
 1E – Evaluate and modify steps to accomplish a task
2-The student collaborates and communicates both locally and
globally using digital tools and resources to reinforce and
promote learning. The student is expected to:
 2C – Format digital information, including font attributes, color,
white space, graphics and animation for a defined audience and
communication medium
 2D – Select, store, and deliver products using a variety of media,
formats, devices and virtual environments
Technology TEKS (K-2) - Continued
5 – The student practices safe, responsible, legal, and ethical
behavior while using digital tools and resources. The
student is expected to:
 5A - adhere to acceptable use policies reflecting
appropriate behavior in a digital environment;
 5B - comply with acceptable digital safety rules, fair use
guidelines, and copyright laws; and
 5C - practice the responsible use of digital information
regarding intellectual property, including software, text,
images, audio, and video
6 - The student demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use
of technology systems, concepts, and operations. The
student is expected to:
 6C - perform basic software application functions,
including opening an application and creating, modifying,
printing, and saving files
 Grade: 1
 Subject: Math
 Lesson Length: The project will consist of 2
– 45 minute math sessions.
 Students will be able to identify the main
attributes of circles, triangles, squares,
rectangles, rhombuses and hexagons.
 Students will be able to combine individual
shapes into a new shape and apply attributes
to the new shape.
 Students will work cooperatively and
creatively and communicate affectively
throughout the learning process and
presentation of their final product.
 Students will work in collaborative pairs and
use one team members own personal mobile
devices such as an iPod, iPad, tablet or smart
phone.
 Students will need to download the
Educreation app.
 Students will photograph two-dimensional
shapes.
 Students will label and identify the
attributes of the shapes photographed.
 Students will combine shapes into a new
shape and name and describe its attributes.
 Students will present their projects to the
class for assessment.
 Formative Assessment of Math TEKS
 Checklist – Math TEKS Addressed
 4 shapes photographed taken, shapes labeled and a
minimum of 3 attributes listed per shape (15/15)
 Creation of a new shape using a minimum of 3 shapes
and a minimum of 3 attributes for the new shape
given. (9/9)
 Total (24/24)
 Scale Score – Technology TEKS Addressed
 Creativity and Innovation (Scale 1-5)
 Critical Thinking (Scale 1-5)
 Communication (Scale 1-5)
 Collaboration (Scale 1-5)
 Total (20/20)
 Students will work in pairs using one member
of each pairs personal mobile device.
 For student pairs without a mobile device or
those wishing to use a larger work surface,
they may checkout an iPad from the first
grade iPad cart or borrow the teachers iPad.
 The teacher and students will review proper use
of sharing a mobile learning device when
working in pairs or teams.
 The teacher and students will review proper
digital safety, responsible use and care of their
mobile devices and proper behavior while using
digital tools and resources.
 The teacher will circulate and assisted as
needed.
 Students will notify the teacher when they are
ready to upload their finished product to the
class Educreation account for instructions and
assistance.

Editor's Notes

  1. 1.6D - Identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares, as special rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons and describe their attributes using formal geometric language. -The TEKS listed above is the skill to be reinforced through the student development of the product and the feedback given to the students by the teacher through informal and formal assessment.
  2. Math TEKS to be address in Unit 6 during the 5th six weeks.
  3. A great number of technology TEKS are covered by the simple implementation of BYOD and the use of mobile devices for students to produce a final product that demonstrates their understanding of the Math TEKS and driving question.
  4. Session 1 – Students will work in collaborative pairs to take their four photographs, upload them into Educreation and label and name a minimum of five attributes. They will also combine a minimum of three of the shapes to create a new shape and describe its attributes. Session 2 – Student pairs will present their products to the class and be graded on content, understanding and 21st century skills using a checklist for basic criteria and scale score on 21st century skills.
  5. The student outcomes will address the main TEKS addressing first grade geometry and a number of technology TEKS for grades K-2. These outcomes will be built upon and compared and contrasted with TEKS addressing three-dimensional shapes.
  6. Each student pair will use one members own mobile devices and will download the Educreation app based on written permission given by the parent at the beginning of the year during parent orientation.
  7. -Students will work in collaborative pairs to photograph four different, two-dimensional shapes found in the classroom using their mobile devices and its camera features. -Student pairs will upload the pictures to the Educreation app and label and identify the attributes of the shapes photographed. -Students will combine a minimum of three of the shapes they chose into a new shape and name and describe the attributes of the new shape. -Students will present their projects to the class to solidify understanding and for assessment.
  8. Teacher will use a simple checklist for formative assessment of the Math TEKS and a scale score assessment of the 21st Century skills to be assessed. The math checklist will be used as a math grade and the technology scale score will be used as a computer grade.
  9. Technology TEKS – Strand 5: Digital Citizenship 5 – The student practices safe, responsible, legal, and ethical behavior while using digital tools and resources. The student is expected to: 5A - adhere to acceptable use policies reflecting appropriate behavior in a digital environment; 5B - comply with acceptable digital safety rules, fair use guidelines, and copyright laws; and 5C - practice the responsible use of digital information regarding intellectual property, including software, text, images, audio, and video
