15. Please mark your calendars, tell your
friends and watch for information
and events leading up to the
Business Exchange Event!
We are very excited to announce the first of what we hope will be an annual signature event, entitled, BusX, The Business Exchange…
We currently have quite a few offerings on campus for students to have a window on the working world: Slice of Business Life, Luter Lecture Series, business leader visits to lecture in classrooms, clubs, etc.
What is this, exactly, and how is it different?
This event will be provided much like a business meeting that you would register for and attend, located right here on campus.
We will invite alumni, primarily, and will also include other business leaders as well.
We will work to incorporate relatively young business leaders (10 years out) as well as some seasoned leaders with more experience.
They will come and give back by sharing their expertise, ideas, and insights, specifically around being professionally ready for the working world, offering workshops and panel discussions on topics like,
How to promote yourself
How to negotiate a job and future promotions
How to thrive in an era of disruptive technology and innovation
Personal Finance – How to prepare financially for a secure and happy future.
There will be no classes during the day, so that Luter School of Business Students will be free to attend this valuable conference.
Ultimately, we hope that this will provide a focused forum that will give our students an edge in the world , greatly advancing their opportunity for success.
There are obviously many benefits on multiple levels in offering this program:
Multiple networking opportunities will exist, both formally and informally, for students to make connections with business leaders and learn from them about career paths/professional lessons.
We will be welcoming our business school alumni and reconnecting with them, in some cases, for the first time in many years.
Over 250 business school alumni have responded to a request for information and expressed an interest in giving back to current students and the university.
We have been working to establish relationships with business leaders in locations where many of our students call home – Northern VA (where over 40% of our students live). This event will be a great opportunity to continue to further that relationship, which will, in turn, increase awareness of CNU, the Luter School of Business and the high caliber of our students for internships, mentorships, and employment opportunities in the future.
The Business Exchange event will begin Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 22.
We will host our annual Spring Networking event as a Kick-Off to the event. Paul Trible, the dean and others will welcome our guests and students will be able to meet them. Please plan to be a part of this event.
At 6:00 p.m. Faculty and CNU VIPs (which includes you!) will be invited to a cocktail reception and dinner to thank our alumni and other business leader speakers for their contribution of time and expertise at this event.
The day will begin with a continental breakfast and networking opportunity in the Washington Room/Ballroom. Students, faculty, BoA will get breakfast and come into the Ballroom and be seated. The Dean and Chairman of the Board of Advisors will Welcome everyone and introduce the Keynote Speaker.
We have several speakers we are vetting, currently. We have considered a futurist-type speaker, but may also have a specific theme each year – such as technology (how to use technology to advance your career)
After the keynote speaker, students will head to the small workshops, panel discussions they have selected.
We have several ideas for structuring the day:
Each section may be sponsored by a business school organization (i.e. CEE Fund, Beta Gamma Sigma, AMA, etc.)
One section may be all about majors,
Different tracks (i.e. CEE Fund track, Women in Business track, etc.)
We are currently asking students for topics of interest and will also be asking you in a few minutes.
We plan to Start Small and Achieve Success! So we are thinking about not more than 8 workshops/panel discussions/per session, time frame.
At lunchtime, we plan to have an opportunity for students to grab a boxed lunch and select a table with a business leader/company at each table for a networking opportunity at this time.
Then two more sessions in the afternoon.
We may ask speakers to provide their workshop more than 1x/day so that students have multiple opportunities to attend.
Topics could include:
Personal Finance
How to thrive in an era of disruptive technological change
How to market yourself
Entrepreneurship
Things to know when applying to graduate school
At the end of the day, we will have a networking reception, to thank the presenters and offer students a final opportunity to talk with these business leaders.
