AGENDA
3. Origins of IoT
“If we had computers that knew everything there was to
know about things – using data they gathered without
any help from us – we would be able to track and count
everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss, and cost. We
would know when things needed replacing, repairing, or
recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best.
The Internet of Things has the potential to change the
world, just as the Internet did. Maybe even more so”
- Kevin Ashton in a presentation to Procter & Gamble in 1999
4. IoT – Why we are not there yet
~40% of all data is never stored;
remainder is stored locally offshore
Only ~1% of data can be streamed
onshore for daily use
Data cannot be accessed in real time,
enabling only “ad hoc” analysis
Reporting is limited to a few metrics,
which are monitored in retrospect
No interface is to enable real time
analytics to capture offshore data
Maintenance is still conducted at
manufacturer-recommended
intervals

11. Transforming Homes
SECURITY AND
SAFETY
Data from cameras
and other sensors
are analyzed and
alerts users if danger
(e.g risk of Childers
drowning) is
identified
USAGE-BASED DESIGN
Usage patters are collected
and analyzed to design the
next generation of products
PRE-SALES ANALYTICS
Better understand of user
enables cross-selling
opportunities
ENERGY
MANAGEMENT
Thermostat and
multiple sensors
learn about users
behavior and
allow remote
control CHORE
AUTOMATION
Autonomous

appliances and
devices
learn about
users’ behavior
and identify best
time to
perform tasks
autonomously

PUBLIC SAFETY AND HEALTH
13. Transforming Mines
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT :
Use IoT to centrally or remotely
optimize operations
HEALTH AND SAFETY : Real-time
tracking of workers and equipment
to issue alerts
CONDITION-BASED MAINTENANCE :
Through continuous monitoring, determine
when maintenance will be needed
proactively
IOT-ENABLED R&D : With actual usage
data generated by IoT-enabled equipment,
suppliers can develop new components and
eliminate unused features
PRE-SALES ENABLEMENT : Based on
usage data, equipment suppliers can
suggest more appropriate models or cross-
sell additional equipment
14. Transforming Cars
DYNAMIC PRICING MODEL
Usage-based insurance rates
based on driver behavior
INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND
REDUCE COST
Remote optimization of
commercial fleets
