8. INDUSTRY ANALYSIS:
Home Furnishings Stores Retail:
Operators in this industry retail a range of home furnishing goods
Merchandise is purchased from domestic (in some cases international)
manufacturers and wholesalers, and then sold to the public.
Key Success Factors:
• Ability to control stock on hand
• Proximity to key markets
• Attractive product presentation
• Experienced work force
11. JAKE HIGGINS:
BUSINESS ANALYST AT TARGET
What are the key trends/issues?
“Retail drives business with the US, and international companies need expert
advise on what to merchandise for their consumers. The key trends and issues
are continuing to seek what the market demand is, and providing that demand
through goods or services that you retail. Buyers must be able to find the right
good to merchandise.”
What can someone expect in his or her position or similar positions?
“A buyer for Target spends a lot of time working with a cross-functional team to
identify goods they would like to merchandise, creating a plan to produce or
import that product, and then forecasting what sales will be like to determine the
amount of product you actually will buy.”
What talents/skills are the most crucial to success in this line of work?
“Along with a strong will to learn and understand the market, an attitude of
teamwork and collaboration is very crucial. As a buyer, you work with many
teams to make your merchandising strategy come to life. Collaboration is
critical.”
12. TIMOTHY KNIGHT:
BUYER AT FORD MOTOR COMPANY
What are the key challenges in this industry?
“Some key challenges today are managing supply from foreign
countries. Presently China has an appreciating currency, increasing
labor and energy costs and logistics costs that are linked to oil and
overall strength of global economies (stronger economies = more
demand/shipments = higher costs)”
What do you like least about your job?
“The thing I like the least is when someone has an assignment or needs
their request turned around very quickly. It causes you to have to
reprioritize things and your schedule.”
What talents/skills are the most crucial to success in this line of work?
“Talents and skills that are helpful are patience, ability to multi-task and
strong analytical skills. Sometimes you need to play detective and dig
into several different areas to come up with an answer or solution.”
13. MATT CAMPBELL:
PLANNER AT MEIJER AND BORDERS
Knowing what you do now, would you approach this career (or job) in
the same way? If not, what would you do differently, and why?
“I would do it similarly, I would have learned excel and access earlier
and gotten familiar with some of the software being used like SAP, etc. a
lot of jobs won't consider you if you don't have familiarity with some of
these.”
Is this industry stable, growing, declining?
“The industry is growing. Both of the companies I've worked for in the
past few years have added a planning organization over the last few
years and increased their supply chain and logistics team.”
What are the job specifications?
“You need someone detail oriented, comfortable with numbers, able to
put some pressure of the vendors and who doesn't give up. The
technical details of the job can easily be taught after that.”
14. IN CONCLUSION
I have learned so much about myself by
completing this portfolio, and the
knowledge I have gained I know I will be
able to use throughout my schooling and
my future career.
