A business goes through several maturity stages as it grows: startup, survival, takeoff, success, and maturity. In the startup stage, the owner performs most functions with a simple structure. In survival, a business builds its customer base with a small organization and sales manager. As a business succeeds and grows, it formalizes its structure, prepares for high growth by putting functional managers in place and developing basic processes. During takeoff, a business hires managers for future growth and develops a more complex structure. Finally, in maturity a business expands management, eliminates inefficiencies, and establishes extensive systems.
