4. BUSINESS …..
 Ghanshyam Das Birla entered the business arena
during the time of First World War.
 Besides Opium and silver, they make a killing
supply of jute bags and uniforms to the army when
World War 1 broke out. They Went into textiles in a
big way setting up mills across the country.
 He established keshoram Cotton Mills. Along with
cotton mills he diversified to jute business and
shifted his base to Calcutta city in Bengal ,the
world’s largest jut producing region.
 He established Birla jute Mills in Bengal.

Group.
 Birla Group is the world’s largest aluminium rolling
company.

 In Calcutta established a jute firm, much to the
consternation of established European merchants,
whom the biased policies of the British government
favored other than the local Bengali . He had scale
a number of obstacles as the British government
and Scottish merchants tried to shut his business
by unethical and monopolistic methods, but he was
able to persevere.

 When World War 1 resulted in supply problems
throughout the British Empire, Birla’s business sky-
rocketed.

9. QUALITIES OF G.D.BIRLA
 G.D. Birla was the good & successful entrepreneur.
 In 1957, he was awarded India’s second highest
civilian honor , the Padma Vibhushan by the
Government of India.
 There is a memorial to Ghanshyam Birla in Goldens
Green Crematorium, Hoop lane London.
