Running an Information-Services Business Within a Large Global Corporation
Mark Pandick, Manager, Knowledge Services, IBM Market Insights
The focus of this session was on how IBM’s Knowledge Services team operates an information-services business internally within a large global corporation. The session started from the premise that the organization does not have a budget per se, but is rather a self-funding model. This session discussed how to determine what types of services to offer; what kinds of IBM colleagues to serve; what value measurements to use; what funding mechanisms to use for content, people and IT resources. The session finished with key considerations and lessons learned for those who might try to implement something similar.
In 2018, we heard a LOT about tariffs, blockchain, Brexit, trade wars with China, natural disasters and labor shortages. As we look ahead to 2019, there’s a good chance we’ll continue to hear about those topics. How can you be proactive and tackle these issues head-on? What will really matter to your stakeholders and your supply chain in the coming year?
Learn:
- Why it’s time to be proactive about risk management – wait & see is no longer an option
- How sustainability and corporate social responsibility will affect how you manage your supply chain
- Why automation is here to stay and how it will affect the procurement profession

IBM's big data seminar programme- the case for big data & analytics - Gareth ...Internet World
Big Data Meets Big Analytics Theatre - June 18th, 13:00-13:30
Companies that have the capability to analyse ALL of their available data, rather than a subset, have a powerful advantage over their contemporaries who do not. Coupled with the right talent and supporting business infrastructure, a big data platform enables your organisation to tackle problems that could not previously be fully explored - but where do you start? IBM has helped organisations of all sizes understand the problems that big data technology and proven mining approaches can address; from analysing larger volumes of data than was previously possible to drive more precise answers, to analysing data in motion to capture opportunities that were previously lost. In this seminar, Gareth discusses some of the use cases that could provide your first steps into big data.
Gareth Mitchell Jones, IBM Big Data & Analytics Leader, UK & Ireland pitches about the importance of Data and how it can give companies a competitive advantage.

Customers are more empowered and connected than ever, and the customer’s journey has grown more complex. Their expectations are growing and trust is diminishing as they may interact with multiple brands through web, mobile and social channels.
Considering 70% of the buying process in a complex sale is already complete before prospects are willing to engage with a live salesperson – it’s critical to understand your customers and anticipate their needs.* However leading consulting firm Econsultancy reports, 91% of companies do not know why customers leave their digital properties without converting.
In this presentation you will learn:
Understand your customers digital journey with quantitative and qualitative analytics
Influence your customers behavior to drive right set of actions
Turn visitors into repeat customers through continuous engagement across digital channels and devices
Gain insights on why traditional approaches of understanding your customers constantly fail

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
