It will be important to set some broad guidelines and ground rules as well as highlighting the dissertation structure that your supervisors would like their students to adhere to. Suffice to say these issues have already been highlighted and discussed with you in detail in your PRISM unit.
In summary, when you start working on your dissertation and develop your thinking and findings a bit more, you may wish to have a chat with your supervisor; a call or Skype or using some other online tool. Also a good idea to send your supervisor your chapters as you complete them so that they can provide their comments as you make progress on other chapters. However please consult your supervisor if he/she wishes to consider an alternative approach.
There is a document called Assessment Guidelines on this Moodle site that gives a very brief outline of the suggested chapters involved in your dissertation and an idea of the number of words that are usually expected in each chapter.
In the meantime, as far as your dissertation structure is concerned, let us just remind you that as a general rule, we would suggest the following chapters and sections for your thesis.
-Title: A clear, concise statement of the topic.
-Abstract: The abstract is a summary of the whole dissertation. It presents all the major elements of your work in a highly condensed form. Maximum of 500 words.
- Contents page: clearly describing chapters and any sub-sections and related page numbers.
- Acknowledgement- Chapter 1 - Introduction: You need to set the scene for your dissertation, tell a story by providing some background to the importance of your chosen subject. You should also make your aims and objectives of the report very clear, by for example providing half a dozen bullets clearly describing what you have in mind and what you wish to explore. You should clearly state your "Research Question (s)" and state why your research is important, what is the research gap, how it contributes to the body of knowledge and potentially it’s significance to the practitioner’s world, and, what benefit will be achieved in carrying out your chosen piece of work.
- Chapter 2 - Literature Survey (LR): This is a very important part of your dissertation (particularly if you only rely on acquiring secondary data and body of knowledge). The aim will be for you to provide robust and credible literature relating to the subject matter. Use of some models/frameworks is encouraged. You will also get a better mark by providing a sound critic in your LR, i.e. what you agree with and what you don't, and, the reasons behind your argument/rationale.
- Chapter 3 - Research Methodology: Here you should describe the methodology used in gathering the data and information. You should make reference to both the primary, if any, (interviews, questionnaire, case study ...) and, secondary research methods (literature review and library based work...). The Prospectus Overview and Instructions
The prospectus is brief document that serves as a road map for the dissertation. It provides the essential framework to guide the development of the dissertation proposal. The prospectus builds on the 10 Strategic Points (shown in Appendix A) and should be no longer than 6-10 pages, excluding the criteria tables and the appendices. The prospectus will be expanded to become the dissertation proposal (Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the dissertation), which will, in turn, be expanded to become the complete dissertation (Chapters 1-5). In short, the prospectus is a plan for the proposal. Prior to developing the prospectus, the 10 Strategic points should be reviewed with the chair and committee to ensure the points are aligned and form a clear, defined, and doable study. The10 Strategic Points should be included in Appendix A of this prospectus document.
It is important to ensure the prospectus is well written from the very first draft. The most important consideration when writing the prospectus is using the required criteria specified in the criterion table below each section and writing specifically to each criterion! Also critical is for learners to follow standard paragraph structure: (1) contains a topic sentence defining the focus of the paragraph, (2) discusses only that single topic, (3) contains three to five sentences, and (4) includes a transition sentence to the next paragraph or section. The sentences should also be structurally correct, short, and focused. Throughout the dissertation process, learners are expected to always produce a well-written document as committee members and peer reviewers will not edit writing. If prospectus it is not well written, reviewers may reject the document and require the learner to address writing issues before they will review it again. Remove this page and the sample criterion table below upon submission for review.

A summary/response is a natural consequence of the reading and annotating process. In this type of essay, writers capture the controlling idea and the supporting details of a text and respond by agreeing or disagreeing and then explaining why.
The first step after active reading is writing a summary. Writing summaries is a common practice in college. They pull together the general conclusions and approaches of experts who have done research in a particular subject. Summaries should be written in your own words although you could include short quoted excerpts if you decide the author’s or speaker’s words summarize a point most precisely. Try to use pertinent quotations from the source, working them in gracefully where appropriate. Probably the best way to write a summary is ask yourself the following questions:

Rhetorical Analysis
The purpose of a Rhetorical Analysis is to break down a text into its component parts and determine whether or not these components work well together to effectively communicate/argue the author’s perspective. As such, you will be writing about how the author puts together their argument and NOT what they are arguing.

f. How does the writer use diction? (Word choice, arrangement, accuracy, is it formal, informal? Technical versus slang?)
g. Does the writer use dialogue? Quotations? Why?
h. Are important terms repeated?
i. What is the sentence structure of text? Are there fragments, run-ons? Is it declarative, imperative, and/or exclamatory? What effect does this have?
j. Does the writer use punctuation to create an effect? Italics, underlining, parentheses?
k. Which marks does the writer use, and when?

Ultimately, you want to organize your paper in the manner you think will prove most effective with your classmates and I, but here are some general guidelines:
· Introduction - Introduce your topic and subject matter. At this point, it might be appropriate to give a short summary of the text in question.
· Thesis: You are making an argument, so you will need a thesis. After analyzing the author’s rhetorical choices, you must decide whether the strategies applied make for an effective or ineffective argument. Your thesis should reflect this. Your thesis should basically state whether or not the text provides an effective argument or not.
· Body Paragraph 1 - appeal (ethos, logos, pathos) or rhetorical strategy to be analyzed.

Our public library in Smallsville is in need of a computer system to
help keep track of who checks books in and out, as well as to keep
track of fines and print reports for us. We have been making out fine
for years recording the information by hand, but Sally and Mary just
don’t have the handwriting they used to, especially at 72 and 81,
respectively. Our new librarian, Marcus, is young and energetic, and
just doesn’t have the patience to keep handwritten records. As head
librarian he wants to be able to do more for our community than just
keep track of books, so he wants to be able to mail out notices of
special events and the like.
Therefore, he has made note of the items he thinks need to be
included in this system. Keep in mind that he knows very little about
computers, so he has probably left some things out. Please feel free
to make any additions or corrections that you feel are absolutely
necessary. Also bear in mind that we are a small town, and do not
have an unlimited budget for such a system or the training required
to use it. A single PC should suffice for our needs right now, but we
might want to grow to two or three, connected together, in a couple
of years.
Here are the main items that are needed:
a. Add a new library patron and be able to edit their basic
information
b. Remove a patron. Ensure that the patron has no books borrowed
and no unpaid fines before deleting them. Provide notice
appropriately.
c. Print a list of all patrons (in some sensible order).
d. Print a list of all patrons with outstanding fines.
e. Add a new book to the catalog. Be able to edit basic book info.
f. Remove a book from the catalog. Ensure no one has it borrowed.
Notify appropriately and do not delete if out.
g. Record a book as lost.
h. Record that a particular patron is borrowing a particular book.
i. Record that someone has returned a particular book. Report any
fines owing and update patron account.
j. Record that a patron has paid some money toward his or her
outstanding fines.
k. Print all overdue books, and who has them.
l. Print address mailing labels
Do not attempt to provide card catalog services for allowing patrons
to search for books, although we may want to expand the system
later to include this capability with multiple stations. You may
assume each book has a unique acquisition number, and you may
use these numbers to refer to books borrowed and returned. For
each book, record acquisition number, title, author and any other
information you need to process the above commands.

for a research project (or as the initial step for getting approval to develop a dissertation).

statement of your idea and an examination of the significance of a research problem:

o What is the topic of study related to that problem?
o What methods should be used to analyse the research problem?
o Why this is an important research, what is its significance?

A rhetorical analysis assignment usually asks you to read two articles and write a paper that accomplishes
three things: 1) identifies the ideas each author is trying to communicate; 2) analyzes the techniques each
author uses to accomplish his or her purpose; and 3) compares and contrasts the authors’ approaches. The
assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. This
handout provides suggestions to assist you in the process.
Topic Selection and Research
Students are typically asked to select a topic and two articles that address that topic. Select a topic related to
your area of study or that you find especially interesting and brainstorm related issues. Take care not to make
your topic too broad, and then follow these steps:
Search the library databases to find a good selection of articles on your topic. Don’t waste time! Ask for
help if your searches yield no results. The research librarians provide valuable assistance.
It will be to your advantage if the articles you select come from sources with distinctly different
readerships (e.g., Forbes and The Nation; Audubon and The Washington Times).
Ideally, the writers of both articles should make clear, assertive arguments. Research reports, clinical
studies, or other informative writing will likely be less useful to you than more persuasive writing, as
the authors of the former tend to utilize fewer obvious rhetorical devices.
Avoid shorter articles, as they offer little for analysis.
Determining Each Author’s Purpose
Once you have selected your two articles, you are ready to begin your pre-writing activities. The
following suggestions should help you begin.
Audience analysis: For each article, examine the entire print or electronic publication. By scanning the other
articles, editor’s page, graphics, and ads, you will be able to make an informed judgment regarding the
demographics, values, and personal and political interests of the audience. Determining the overall aim of the
publication should help you consider what the article itself may be intended to accomplish.
Read with rhetorical awareness: First, read each article all the way through without making notes or
annotations. Ask yourself about the writer’s intentions, and how the writer’s choices affect you as a reader.
Often you can determine the rhetorical purpose of an author by gauging your intellectual and emotional
reactions to the presentation. If you are angry or upset, for example, the author has achieved an effect through
the use of particular rhetorical devices.
Identify the rhetorical tactics: Next, read the texts closely and make annotations with the aim of highlighting

Assessment Task
This is an applied assessment, based around a particular HRM problem scenario. The overall aim is to further develop your ability to apply your knowledge on the theory and practice of HRM.
What you are expected to do is very similar to the assignment that you carried out in Year 2 HRM. However the approach is slightly different. Although you are expected to draw on literature (academic papers and research reports, as well as more practitioner focused reports and features) there is not a standard literature review section in your report. Instead you will need to use these sources, together with other relevant organizational case examples, to support your recommendations for change.
You need to start by choosing one of the three case scenarios that are on Moodle. The cases are based on contemporary HRM issues that we will be covering in class this year: age diversity, international HRM (growth and resourcing) and employee wellbeing and work-life balance.
Structuring your report
1. Introduction
In this section you will need to summarise the key issues in the case scenario. If there is data contained in the case scenario comment on that – what is the data telling you about what the underlying organizational problems might be. This should help you focus on the recommendations section.
You then need to comment on the wider contextual factors that could be affecting the issues in the case study. For example, if you are looking at age diversity what are the wider social, economic and political factors that are making age diversity a growing area of concern for policy makers. What supporting evidence can you draw on e.g. feature in the economist, WERS data, CIPD research reports.
2. Proposed solutions (two/three max)
In this section you need to recommend and justify two/three key solutions for the key issues set out in your introduction.
For each recommendation, state clearly what the recommendation is. Then use a combination of academic sources, practitioner sources, and other case examples to support your recommendation. Remember managers will pay more attention to HR’s recommendations if these are supported with good evidence. For example, if you are looking at International expansion and resourcing in a technology-focused organization then look for comparable organizational examples. Who are the other well-respected technology companies that you could include. Try and find out how they dealt with International resourcing as they expanded.
3. Implementation plan, with key milestones and evaluation criteria
For any of you who have taken managing projects then you can apply your knowledge from that module to help with this section. Otherwise look for clues in other case examples, as well as research reports. Be careful not to be too ambitious, remember the SMART approach to objective setting.

You will see below that headings within the paper are in bold and follow the heading styles required by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.; American Psychological Association, 2009).
This first section of your paper is the introduction of your paper. It is not labeled separately. It introduces the topic of your paper and the points you intend to make. Why is this topic important to psychology? This section also introduces how your paper will be organized, such as stating that you will review the historical background of the topic and then follow it with an overview of related current trends and discussion.
To summarize the introduction needs to be one to two pages in length. The introduction provides a brief overview of what will be covered and the purpose of the research paper.
Literature Review
This is the beginning of your literature review. Keep in mind, the literature review is not just a summary of each individual article. It is also a critical analysis of your topic supported by information you learned when reading the background literature. Your APA formatted citations for the sources of the information you are discussing is your indication of the literature reviewed.
This section will give an overview of the history of your topic and the theories being covered. It will discuss where the theories came from and how they have evolved over time. Depending on your topic, it may include comparisons and contrasts between the historical theories you are covering.
To summarize the literature review is taken in part from what you wrote in Week 3 Assignment 2. It should include at the very minimum the 6 articles that you found for that assignment. The literature review is not a copy of that material. Rather, it is a synthesis of the material you found into a cohesive review of the literature on your chosen topic.
