Time really flies and you may not realize the Oral Health
Division Bulletin has reached its 10th
Birthday! Congratulations to
those who initiated this visionary and eagerly awaited bulletin as well
as having successfully sustained it for close to a decade.
We find it most fulfilling to be able to reach out to all our dear staff in
the far flung corners of the country disseminating information that
brings us together as the oral health family. Coming out with this bul-
letin has been a rewarding and exciting experience for us and we
hope you will find it as interesting as the ones before. As you may
know, we are the new troops on board and bringing to you new possi-
bilities as reflected in the bulletin’s different appearance. Our aim is to
give it a breath of fresh air with a contemporary look and less formal
layout in line with the rise of Gen Y and advent of social media. Nev-
ertheless, we have maintained its objectives and hope that this bulletin
will continue to keep you informed and updated.
This issue covers several events including our main event for 2013
namely; The Oral Health Carnival or Karnival Kesihatan Pergigian:
Gigi Ku Mutiara Ku in conjunction with World Oral Health Day and the
record breaking longest non stop puppet show in Malaysia as attested
by The Malaysia Book of Records, A Smoke Free Mouth Campaign
and the launching of the 2013 Mouth Cancer Awareness Week
among others.
These achievements are highlighted and visually captured for us to
look back and enjoy those wonderful moments as well as to reflect
and improve in the future. We wish to thank all authors of the various
articles and Dr Yaw Siew Lian for proof reading the articles. Last but
not least, we hope that you will enjoy exploring this bulletin.

THE PRINCIPAL DIRECTOR OF ORAL HEALTH
MINISTRY OF HEALTH
With the name of ALLAH the most gracious and merciful...
It is my pleasure to extend Happy New Year greetings for 2014 with the hope that many exciting
developments will gallop into our lives in this Year of the Horse.
Year 2013 was a challenging year. We had our 13th
national elections and a 3-in-1 package of a new
Honourable Health Minister, YB Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, a new Ministry Secretary-General YBhg
Datuk Farida Mohd Ali and a new Director General of Health, YBhg Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Awareness and training began for Outcome Based Budgeting, MOH being a pioneer Ministry and the Ministry began preparations for the
move into accrual accounting. We gained approval for guidelines and the subsequent reactivation of gazettement of Dental Public Health
Specialists in September 2013.We successfully held our Karnival Kesihatan Pergigian in conjunction with World Oral Health Day 2013 on
the 6 October 2013 and longest puppet show that led us into the Malaysian Book of Records. We were the biggest supporter of the 35th
Asia Pacific Dental Congress held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 7 - 12 May 2013 with participation of 1,250 officers and auxiliaries. We
supported the first Malaysian Dental Therapists’ Conference on 5 - 7 April 2014 which garnered participation of almost 630 dental nurses
from near and far.
2013 was also the year the Malaysian Dental Council moved with the Dental Deans’ Council to activate the Moratorium on dental under-
graduate education. It was the year of conflict in Egypt which required us to work with the Ministry of Education to consider bringing back
our dental students. We moved with the Dental Deans’ Council to finalise the establishment of the National Conjoint Board for Dental Post-
graduate Education. It was a year of working tirelessly to secure funds in a big way for dental specialists’ equipment, and gratefully we were
given RM 15 Million. It was a year when the unprecedented increase in dental graduates finally sunk home, in spite of the preparations
made in anticipation of this increase.
Year 2013 also saw us pursue the need to restructure our oral health organization for better career prospects at state and national levels
for our staff. We again tirelessly worked for better career prospects for our Dental Surgery Assistants, noting that they have been left be-
hind. DSA numbers have also fallen short of the increasing dental officer numbers causing the program to resort to Pekerja Sambilan Har-
ian. We engaged the dental fraternity for the all-important oral health human resource projections for the country, liberalisation within the
ASEAN region and the formulation and review of guidelines (temporary practicing certificates, public information and blood borne viruses)
We were the beneficiary of the grace and generosity of our counterparts in the Army who taught our dental technologists the art and sci-
ence of their ‘Compact and Tough’ cutting unit. 2013 was also NBOS year within and outside of the Ministry of Health where focus was not
only given to community programmes in Sabah and Sarawak under NBOS 6 but also to the elderly, single mothers and ‘special groups’
under NBOS 7. The year saw our programme move into training for our new Gingival Index for Schoolchildren (GIS) which will go into full
swing in 2014.Last year, we engaged Prof Helen Whelton, a WHO consultant to train and calibrate a core group of examiners for enamel
fluorosis research.2013 was the year when we made the decision to invest time, money and people into the use of social media, and our
features on our blog and YouTube took flight. It was also a year of innovation with the first prototype mobile dental laboratory which will go
into operation this year.
Year 2013 saw us justifying for inclusion of dental components in Minor Specialist Hospitals and making a bid for inclusion in Non-specialist
Hospitals as well. In addition, we moved to formalise our Oral Pathology & Oral Medicine specialists in Pathology Departments in Hospitals.
Dentistry has seen many advances in technology and systems in this century, and I am conscious of living history.
We finalized our Dental Bill to the MOH Legal Advisor and the Dental Bill has at last reached the Attorney General’s Chambers and we
hope that it will be read in Parliament this year. The Dental Regulations are being drafted. The MDC secretariat has shifted out of the office
in Complex E to Cyberjaya. This move was made to give them more space, which they so urgently need to prepare for the implementation
of the new Dental Act. The future Dental Therapists’ Committee’s secretariat will be set up in the same premises in Cyberjaya.
In 2014, we look forward to being more visible to the public, more effective in our activities and more efficient in our delivery of service. This
promises to be a rewarding year for us all.

CAT (Compact & Tough) merupakan satu set peralatan medan lengkap yang
direka dan dibangunkan oleh Bahagian Pergigian, Angkatan Tentera Malaysia
(ATM) untuk digunakan semasa membuat rawatan medan atau rawatan di luar klinik
tetap. Modul ini mula dibangunkan pada tahun 2008 dengan berkonsepkan
treatment unit yang mempunyai tripod dan disimpan dalam beg loreng. Modul ini
pernah dicalonkan untuk Anugerah Inovasi ATM dan telah mendapat tempat kedua
di dalam kategori pengurusan pelanggan.
CAT telah diuji dan digunakan di seluruh Malaysia sama ada semasa program
tentera bersama rakyat atau program jiwa murni ke sekolah-sekolah. Di samping itu
ia juga telah dihantar dan digunakan di luar negara oleh anggota pergigian yang
bertugas dibawah misi PBB seperti di Afghanistan dan Lebanon. Setakat ini model
CAT yang telah siap ialah sebanyak 16 termasuk yang digunakan oleh tentera New
Zealand dan tentera Brunei.
Unit CAT dicipta untuk menghasilkan peralatan yang tahan lasak di samping
memudahkan pergerakan semasa membuat rawatan terutamanya di kawasan
pedalaman yang sukar dilalui oleh kenderaan besar. Ia juga direka supaya boleh
dibuka dan dipasang dalam masa singkat tanpa memerlukan tenaga kerja yang
ramai. Di antara kebaikan yang terdapat pada modul unit ini berbanding dengan
peralatan medan komersial lain ialah:
lebih senang untuk diselenggara,
lebih ringan,
senang disimpan,
masa penyediaan sebelum rawatan yang ringkas,
kos pembinaan rendah jika dibandingkan peralatan komersial yang sedia ada
di pasaran tempatan mahupun luar negara.
Bahagian Kesihatan Pergigian telah berkolabrasi dengan jayanya bersama
Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) untuk mengadakan Bengkel Latihan
Membangunkan Unit Compact & Tough (CAT) yang telah diadakan di Lok Kawi,
Sabah dan Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. Objektif bengkel ini adalah untuk
memurnikan tenaga mahir dalam membangunkan Unit CAT di kalangan
Juruteknologi Pergigian di seluruh Malaysia. Bahagian Kesihatan Pergigian
mengucapkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan dan ribuan terima kasih kepada
Brig. General Dato’ Dr Shukri Hassin, Pengarah, Bahagian Pergigian ATM dan
anggotanya atas kerjasama serta jasa memberi tunjuk ajar dan berkongsi
kemahiran bersama anggota Perkhidmatan Pergigian, KKM.
Penghasilan Unit CAT merupakan kolabrasi multi-sektoral di antara Kementerian
Kesihatan Malaysia dengan Kementerian Pertahanan dan juga merupakan langkah
strategi dalam National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) yang ditegaskan oleh
kerajaan. Melalui bengkel-bengkel tersebut, sebanyak dua model prototype telah
berjaya dihasilkan oleh Juruteknologi Pergigian. Dua buah CAT yang dihasilkan itu
sedang menunggu pensijilan daripada SIRIM dan juga SRS untuk pensijilan
keselamatan elektrik.

KARNIVAL KESIHATAN PERGIGIAN : GIGIKU MUTIARAKU
& MALAYSIA BOOK OF RECORDS BONEKA CHA-CHA
T he National Level Oral Health
Carnival, with the theme ‘Gigi
Ku Mutiara Ku’ was successfully held on 6
October 2013 at Berjaya Times Square,
Kuala Lumpur. It was an honour to have
Yang Amat Bhg Datin Paduka Seri Hjh
Rosmah Mansor, the wife of the Hon Prime
Minister of Malaysia and patron of
PERMATA, the children’s nurturing
organization to officially launch this one-of- a
-kind event.
The Carnival was held in conjunction with
World Oral Health Day 2013 and included
beating The Malaysia Book of Records for
the longest non-stop puppet show in
Malaysia. Research has shown puppet
shows to be a scientifically validated tool to
impart health messages effectively to young
children.
Apart from the non-stop puppet show that
went on for over 12 hours, other activities
were held such as dental health
exhibitions, free dental check-ups, stage
shows with oral health messages as well as
play-n-learn activities which were aimed at
instilling the right oral health behaviour
especially among pre-school children.
The success of this carnival was measured not
only by the number of people it was able to
attract or from the number of activities that were
carried out, but by the collaborative effort
between the agencies involved; be it within the
Ministry of Health or outside the ministry, whether
government or otherwise such as PERMATA,
The Armed Forces, Dewan Bandaraya
K.Lumpur, KEMAS, JKR, The Royal Malaysian
Police, Universities, The Ministry of Education
and The Malaysian Association of Dental Public
Health Specialists. This carnival truly portrayed
the collaboration, cooperation and teamwork as
embodied under the National Blue Ocean
Strategy (NBOS) advocated by the government.
The puppet show was held within the carnival in
order to attract children to oral health care.
Studies have shown that puppet shows are an
effective medium to deliver dental messages.
Based on the effectiveness of using puppets to
deliver health messages, this year the Oral
Health Division of the Ministry of Health
Malaysia will be entering into a Memorandum of
Understanding with Universiti Pendidikan
Tanjung Malim, with the aim of developing,
implementing and evaluating puppet
shows as an oral health promotion
medium for kindergarten and
preschool children.

Asian Chief Dental Officers’ Meeting 2013

ASEAN CHIEF DENTAL OFFICERS MEETING
27-28 Ogos 2013 @Chiang Mai, Thailand
The ASEAN Chief Dental Officers Meeting was
held from 27 to 28 August 2013 and is an annual
initiative amongst the Chief Dental Officers in the
ASEAN countries to discuss matters of interest
and improve networking to further strengthen
healthcare in their respective countries. Of particu-
lar interest was the commencement of the ASEAN
Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 which will
have a bearing on dental practitioners as they are
one of the seven professions under the Mutual
Recognition Agreement of ASEAN that allows
them to work freely within the ASEAN states.
The event was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand
where the Inter-country Centre for Oral Health
(ICOH) head office is located. Participants were
Chief Dental Officers (CDOs) or their representa-
tives from all ASEAN countries. Accordingly, Dr
Khairiyah Abd Muttalib, the Principal Director of
Oral Health, Ministry of Health Malaysia repre-
sented the country. The theme of the Conference
was ‘Quality of Dental Services in ASEAN Coun-­
tries’ and sought to establish an alliance among all
CDOs to further enhance oral healthcare amongst the ASEAN
population.
In a nutshell, all the participants agreed that their first
priority was cooperation among members in promoting
community-based oral healthcare for the people. Dr Khairiyah
Abd Muttalib gave an oral presentation on our country’s
achievements and future challenges in oral healthcare
delivery.
Judging from the numerous enquiries posed by the
other participants to the Principal Director’s talk, it appears
our strategies and practices in providing safe and quality oral
healthcare are highly sought after by other developing
countries within the ASEAN family.
The 5th
Asian Chief Dental Officers’ Meeting 2013
(5th
ACDOM 2013) was held from 9 – 11 September
2013 in Bali, Indonesia. This meeting was jointly organ-
ized by three countries – Indonesia, Malaysia and Thai-
land, the culmination of the joint efforts of the Ministry of
Health Indonesia, the Oral Health Division, Ministry of
Health Malaysia and Thammasat University, Thailand.
The Oral Health Division Ministry of Health Malaysia has
served as Secretariat for the Scientific Programme for
the fifth time since its inaugural meeting in 2009. There
were participants from 15 countries comprising Chief
Dental Officers (CDO)
Experts on oral health and invited oral health
academics from Indonesia Malaysia, Thailand,
Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Negara Brunei
Darussalam, Singapore, Republic of South Ko-
rea, Hong Kong, SAR Government China, Ne-
pal, Japan, China, India, Timor Leste
(observer) also attended. In addition, there was
a special observer from the Borrow
Foundation who was present by
invitation.
The programme comprised progress updates
from the CDOs/experts from member countries
which focused on ageing population, services,
financing, motivation, oral health promotion,
chronic diseases and research for ageing
population.
All country presentations were based on the
theme: Oral Health-related Quality of Life for
an Ageing Population. The presentation cov-
ered topics on oral health of the elderly and
oral health financing systems.

BREAK FREE FROM SMOKE
9 - 13 October 2013 @ One Utama Shopping Centre, Damansara
ASmoke Free Campaign with the theme ‘Break
Free From Smoke, A Healthier Mouth, A Healthier
You’ was successfully held for four days from 9 to 12 October
2013 at One Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The launching of the campaign was inaugurated by Yang
Berhormat Dato’ Seri Hilmi bin Haji Yahaya, the Deputy Minister of
Health.
A pre-campaign began a few days earlier with a drawing competi-
tion for children with the same
theme. Various activities were also held in conjunction with the cam-
paign such as dental and oral health exhibitions, dental check-ups,
talks regarding smoking and games to promote oral health and to
quit smoking.
Apart from an encouraging turn up of visitors, this campaign was
considered a successful collaborative effort in health promotion by
MADPHS with various partners including the Oral Health Division of
the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Defence, UMCAS, University
of Wellington New Zealand, MyWATCH and Johnson&Johnson Ma-
laysia giving support.
The campaign also raised awareness among the public that dental
professionals are equipped with skills for the prevention and
counselling of the smoking habit.

INTERNATIONAL CARIES DETECTION & ASSESSMENT SYSTEM
The Malaysian Association of Dental Public Health Spe-
cialists (MADPHS) in collaboration with the Oral Health

Pitts delivered a presentation ‘New trends in caries manage-­
ment pathway – A medical approach’ which highlighted the
medical approach as a new paradigm in management of the
caries lesion. Crucial to this new approach is an evidenced
based caries management pathway which includes early car-
ies detection, monitoring and providing operative care only
when necessary. Professor Pitts also shared on new develop-
ments of the International Caries Detection and Assessment
System (ICDAS) for caries detection and the International
Classification and Management System (ICCMSTM), includ-
ing its implementation and clinical relevance.
The voice of the academia towards adopting this new stan-
dard of care in the dental curriculum in Malaysia was heard
through the President of the Dean’s Council, Professor Dr.
Mohamed Ibrahim from the University of Technology MARA,
Shah Alam, Selangor. Professor Rahimah Kadir, the founder
of MADPHS with her far reaching knowledge and
experience in caries prevention shared with the
audience, ‘Therapeutic regimen: a key element
of the caries management pathway’.
Profesor Pitts drew further attention from the au-
dience through expounding on ‘Building the Alli-­
ance for a Cavity-Free Future’, followed by the
official appointment of Local Chair Person for
the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future (ACCF) in
the person of Professor Rahimah Kadir. Lending
further momentum to the session was the historic
moment where the (ACFF) - Malaysian Chapter
was officially launched by Dr.Khairiyah Abd Mut-
talib, Principal Director, Oral Health, MOH. With
this, Malaysia is now a member of the global alli-
ance which was first launched in September
2010. A further momentous event which signified
the dental fraternity striding in unison towards
better oral health for the population drew the ses-
sion to a close, with the Oral Health Division in
the MOH, Deans’ Dental Council and the
MADPHS signing the Declaration to Stop Caries
NOW for a Caries Free Future.
MALAYSIA CHAPTER GOALS
By 2017, 70% of dental schools and dental
associations should have embraced and pro-
moted the “new” approach of “caries as a contin-­
uum” to improve dental caries prevention and
management.
By 2020, to work towards integrating locally
appropriate, comprehensive caries prevention
and management systems and monitoring ap-
proaches.
Every child born in 2026 should stay cavity free
during their life time.

Global collaborative action is needed to challenge global
leaders and other stakeholders including country and com-
munity leaders, health and dental health professionals, public
policy and education communities, and the public
To learn the importance of caries as a disease continuum

sive caries prevention and management that can influence
the continuing problem of caries.
Ensure that primary prevention with appropriate fluoride
strategies are in place, and promote the preventive control of
initial caries lesions through education to change human
behaviour and the use of appropriate, evidenced-based
technologies.

The International Dental Conference on “Caries Control throughout Life in Asia”
was held on 20 to 22 November 2013 in Krabi, Thailand. The conference was
organized by the Dental Innovation Foundation under the Royal Patronage (DIF) of His
Majesty the King of Thailand with the collaboration of The Ministry of Public Health,
Thailand and The Dental Association of Thailand. The international co-sponsors were
The World Health Organization (WHO), The World Dental Federation (FDI) and The
International Association for Dental Research (IADR).
The objectives of this conference were to share and exchange experiences in caries
prevention and control, to apply new developments in appropriate dental caries
prevention for future success and to discuss the implementation of the Minamata
Global Convention on the phasing down of dental amalgam namely; The WHO – UNEP
Initiative.
Renowned speakers from all over the globe presented papers on interesting topics
ranging from global oral health inequalities, the need for public health strategies in
disease prevention and restorative dental care to nutrition in oral health. During the
second day of the course, among 18 participating countries, 5 countries were given the
honour to present their success stories and Malaysia was among those chosen. The
other 4 countries were China, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.
Dr Khairiyah binti Abd Muttalib, The Principal Director of Oral Health, Ministry of
Health, Malaysia presented a paper titled Malaysia: Country Report On Dental Caries
both orally as well as a poster presentation. The Country Report was also published in
the official programme book of the Conference. Other co-authors were Prof Dato’ Wan
Mohd Nasir Wan Othman, Dr Yaw Siew Lian and Dr Norliza Ismail.
Involvement of Malaysia in this conference was significant as it will contribute to the
achievement of better oral health for Malaysians through the integration of primary
prevention, secondary disease prevention and tertiary intervention.

n 26 and 27 November 2013, a seminar on
Projection And Development of Oral Health
Human Capital Needs For Malaysia Till Year
2020 was held at Kuala Lumpur. There were 90 partici-
pants involved consisting of Dental Public Health Spe-
cialists from the Oral Health Division, and Universities.
The seminar was officiated by YBhg Dr Khairiyah Abd
Muttalib, Principal Director of the Oral Health Division,
Ministry Of Health Malaysia.
This seminar was held with the objective to determine
the Oral Health Human Capital Needs for the country till
year 2020. Above all, this seminar also had specific ob-
jectives to be pursued from now until 2020 which are;
To review the Oral Health Human Capital Needs
projected over the last 5 years.
To share different methodologies in projection of hu-
man capital needs and to explore the Oral Health Hu-
man Capital Needs of various agencies.
To determine the projected need for dental specialists,
dentists and dental nurses/ dental auxiliaries for the
country up to 2020.
To formulate appropriate policies related to service
matters.

SYMPOSIUM ON UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE

n the 6 and 7 December 2013, a
symposium on Universal Health
Coverage was held in collaboration with
the Malaysian Association of Dental Public
Health Specialists. Themed ‘Challenges,
Measurement and Evaluation Strategies’, the
symposium was held at the Swiss Garden and
Residences Kuala Lumpur. As many as 40
participants consisting of Dental Public Health
Specialists from the Oral Health Division, the
Armed Forces and Universities were involved.
The symposium was officiated by YBhg
Dr.Khairiyah Abd Muttalib, Principal Director of
The Oral Health Division, Ministry of Health
Malaysia.
During the symposium, two delegates from
Thailand, Dr Wirat Eungpoonsawat from The
National Health Security Office, Thailand and
Dr.Supranee Dalodom, Chief Dental Officer
from the Bureau of Dental Health, Ministry of
Public Health, Thailand were invited to present
their experiences in implementing Universal
Health Coverage in their country. Thailand has,
since 2001 implemented Universal Health
Coverage for their citizens.
Apart from these speakers, another esteemed
presenter was Datin Dr Noral Zeila from the
Oral Health Division who delivered her talk on
‘Oral Health Care in Malaysia- Issues and
Challenges’.

yang lalu, telah berlangsungnya
bengkel penggunaan dan pemantapan
penggunaan media sosial dalam
mempromosikan kesihatan pergigian
kepada masyarakat. Bengkel pembinaan
media sosial ini merangkumi tiga fasa:
Fasa 1 (Mei 2013) , Fasa 2 (Mei hingga
September 2013) dan Fasa 3 (Oktober
2013).
Tujuan bengkel ini diadakan adalah
untuk melatih dan melantik seramai 30
orang pegawai dari jabatan-jabatan ke-
sihatan negeri dari segi kemahiran untuk
membina, mengemas kini, mem-
perkukuh, dan mengawas laman media
sosial kesihatan pergigian bagi negeri
masing-masing. Dengan berte-
makan “Media Sosial wadah Pro-­
m o s i K e s i h a t a n P e r g i g i a n ”
bermaksud kini Bahagian Kesihatan
Pergigian mengambil langkah yang
baharu untuk mempromosikan kesihatan
pergigian melalui media sosial dimana
kini mudah dilayari oleh semua lapisan
masyarakat. Media sosial utama yang
digunakan dalam bengkel ini adalah
aplikasi yang popular dimasa kini seperti
Facebook, Blog dan Youtube. Atas
pelantikan 30 orang pegawai
bertanggungjawab mengendalikan
media sosial kesihatan pergigian negeri
masing-masing, maka kini di Bahagian
Kesihatan Pergigian mempunyai 15
akaun Facebook, 15 akaun Blog dan 15
akaun Youtube.Dengan wujudnya akaun
-akaun media sosial kesihatan pergigian
bagi setiap negeri, ini mempermudahkan

mendekatkan lagi program Bahagian Kesihatan Pergigian dengan
masyarakat Malaysia dan juga antarabangsa. Bahagian Kesihatan Pergigian
juga telah mewujudkan satu Unit Media Sosial yang khususnya mempunyai
objektif-objektif dan peranan ahli jawatankuasa teknikal yang memantau,
mengemaskini dan menambahbaikkan maklumat-maklumat terkini mengenai
kesihatan pergigian untuk laman media sosial rasmi kesihatan pergigian.
Kini di Bahagian Kesihatan Pergigian, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia telah
mempunyai 15 akaun Facebook dan 15 akaun Blog rasmi yang digunakan
untuk menyebarkan maklumat-maklumat kesihatan pergigian secara pantas

Here I was given the chance to participate in the poster
presentation category. The title of my poster was ‘Oral Care: In
The Eyes of Nursing Staff.’ The Research team comprised Dr
Norhayati Hassan (Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Specialist),
Hanim Ripit (Dental Nurse) and myself.
The aim of this study was to investigate oral health care knowl-
edge, attitudes, and practices of nursing staff (non-dental) in Hos-
pital Putrajaya in management of oral care among
hospitalized patients. We were also interested in barriers
encountered by the nursing staff in assuming this role. These
were of interest, as some of the cases that were referred from the
hospital wards to the Oral Specialist Clinic, Hospital Putrajaya
were patients having oral health problems either due to neglect or
due to their medical conditions. Good oral health is important for
better quality of life and support from hospital staff is needed.
Through this research we hoped that collaboration between
nursing and dental health professionals will be developed for
better management of oral health of inpatients in hospitals.

Ican still remember when I was asked to attend a
course on research in year 2011. I was overjoyed as I
was always curious and wanting to learn more about
research. Little did I realize that coming up with a research
proposal was a must even before the whole course started.
My initial joy turned to despair as I realized that this was a
strenuous task and not just a course to fulfill the ‘7 days
training requirement’, but by then there was no turning
back. To cut the story short this was the beginning of my
‘forced’ love affair with research.
As a staff of Hospital Putrajaya, we were encouraged to
attend courses on research and to participate in
research studies to meet hospital requirements where the
rationale was to “get staff exposed and interested in
research.” The management showed commitment by
creating a “friendly and helpful research environment even
for a novice like me. I remember how difficult it was to do a
full literature review, prepare a proposal, questionnaires,
data entry and reports as well as time
management. Neither of these tasks were fun, but I still
saw a faint ray of light shining at the end of the tunnel.
September 7-8, 2013 was Allied Health Professional
Research Day with the theme “Making Research Fun”. The
theme sounded a bit odd for a serious agenda like
research but my thanks to the organizer for ‘thinking out of
the box’ in making research fun. On the first day we were
given some tips and talks on ‘making research fun’ as well
as listening to 8 presenters who shared their interesting
research findings.
On the second day 12 scientific posters were presented,
displayed and judged. More lectures followed as we were
reminded on ‘How to be a responsible researcher?’, data
management and fun with scientific writing.
