The outbreak of Coronavirus has brought all the lives to a halt. Adapting to the
current crisis is not going to be easy at all. This also creates an urgent demand
for new leaders who can bring unique solutions to the table. Moreover, the

of Business APAC has come up with a new magazine issue, “Business APAC's Business
Tycoons of 2020.” The issue focuses on leaders who have outperformed all the
companies in various aspects. We have featured Chirag Kapadia, Founder, and CEO of
TACTPRO consulting on the cover of the magazine. Established in 2018, the company
aims to create a significant space into IT training & consulting, managed IT services, and
technology transformation domain.

Maithillee Zaveri
An Ingenious Artist
And A Brilliant
Entrepreneur Of The
Art Industry
O
ften artists go underappreciated in the society, as
art is always categorized amongst a hobby. Due to
lack of support, there are few artists who get the
opportunity to explore and opt for art as a career. One such
artist who believed in herself and pursued her career in art
is Maithillee Zaveri (Founder at Maithillee), despite of
initially having no supporters she continued following her
zeal for art. From doodling on rough pages to establishing
her art studio, Maithillee has emerged as an ingenious
leader. She was only 10 years old when she discovered her
love for art, and since then she has been experimenting with

all kinds of mediums and colors. In the 10 grade, the
University of Cambridge showcased one of her sculptures
artwork and within the same year, she managed to sell 3 of
her paintings.
“I was ambidextrous and I struggled a lot in studies. My
mind always wandered in doodling or just sketching
whatever I would visualize & capture those memories. The
doodles were always at the last 10 pages of all my
notebooks,” said Maithillee. It was during her college days
when the horizon towards art and history broadened and she
decided to pursue it as a career. However, her family
believed that there was no future in arts, but after seeing
Maithillee establishing herself as an entrepreneur,
successfully running her art studio and featuring throughout
various publications, they started believing in her.
As an artist, the asset you have is your art and it is difficult
to get the exposure needed to succeed. For Maithillee too it
was a struggle during the initial days of her career, as there

It was difficult to set up herself in the industry but with a lot
of hard work and dedication, she managed to settle her art
studio on the map of art galleries and prove that art does
have a future.
As art is the best therapy for mental health, Maithillee did
overcome this time too. While researching, she also found
out that the best platform to showcase art is social media.
Social media did grant her with the noticeable attention she
needed to showcase her art, thus landing her with lots of
emails from art galleries across India. She started getting
clients for whom she would commission artworks for their
homes/offices. These contracts gave her the courage and
strength to open her art studio in Mumbai in 2017.

had to physically struggle outside art galleries to meet the
gallery owners and get her work noticed. All this was too
overwhelming for a struggling artist who initially lacked
support which led her into depression.
She further added, “I thought I could sell through my own
private collections directly to clients, conduct workshops
for all age groups and do commission or customized works
for clients too.” This way she also found a way to cut the
commission for the galleries that feature other artwork.

Maithillee translates to happiness and for
Maithillee herself, happiness is art. An
artist is a great visualizer and observer so
is Maithillee. Her mission, through
Maithillee, is to become a successful artist
and help those talented artists, who dream
big. She has been on her journey alone
without any support so she understands
the struggles of an artist closely.

Maithillee believes, when artists support

can judge or analyze it. All one should do
with art is to appreciate it. And this has
always been her mission and goal.

Maithillee believes that the art industry
has no gender stereotypes, talent is what

all the struggles through sheer talent. She
says, “Every individual has their own sets
of qualities. But mine, are in the talent
sector.” Where many artists stick to a
particular theme, Maithillee believes in
exploring all the options. This is what
helps her in sharping her skills and
become better daily because of talent
triumphs at the end.
Her key to success was also 'patience'.
She did not rush and exhaust herself in the
journey she awaited her opportunity
patiently and did succeed. She adds, “It's
very important to be patient in an art
career. It may take days, weeks, months or
even years to get noticed but don't lose
hope because hard work always pays off!”
The definition of smart and hard work is
different for every individual. Maithillee,
however, believes that to attain great
heights and lead a better and comfortable
life if both smart and hard work are
incorporated equally. Such a person in due
time attains all the accolades and
recognition. Maithillee further asserts, “If
you are not smart your hard work will
never pay. Just like a donkey only does
hard work, whereas a horse does hard
work but uses his smartness whenever and
wherever needed.” Similarly, for smart
work is the result of hard work, as we
keep working, we do gain experience
which helps us attain excellence.
Maithillee concludes by stating that the
effort is important, but where to make that
effort makes a difference.

All great leaders acquired their greatness through
empowering their team – because as individuals
they could not have attained the peaks that they
ultimately attained as leaders. Empowering the team is the
ultimate leap of faith that a leader can do. And right
empowerment can create magic in the team. It gives a
sense of fulfillment that can hardly be matched—along with
infusing energy and enthusiasm in the team. Empowerment
is also the magic wand that ensures ownership and
accountability within the team members. The one factor that
differentiates a pioneering business tycoon from an ordinary
businessman is the quality of empowerment.
One such empowering business leader is Capt Muthu
Krishnan Iyyappan (Founder and CEO of Eka
Academy) who has established himself as an extraordinary
and pioneering business tycoon in the corporate training
industry. He entered the industry despite people warning
him not to because it was such a cluttered market, that a
famous saying goes “if you don't know what to do, then
become a trainer and tell others what to do.” He did
become a trainer and indeed a good one. However, his
journey was not a cakewalk, he encountered his share of
challenges throughout the journey in establishing Eka
Academy, a leading training solution provider today.
The Domino Downfall of Business
Muthu described his initial days of entrepreneurship
experience as wadding in unchartered waters filled with
sharks and crocodiles. The industry he did step into was the
classic example of “Red Ocean” with absolutely no entry
barriers, no pre-defined standards, and no regulations. It
Muthu adds, “We had to mortgage our house to continue
paying the salaries but I am proud to say that we have
never defaulted even by a single month on the salaries to
our team.”
After the commencement of the journey, it was a dream run
for Eka Academy. The team grew from its first employee to
a team of 65 in just 3 years. By 2015, the company
expanded to Europe, thereby becoming the first Indian
training company to have their official presence in Europe.
Unfortunately the very next year, Eka Academy faced its
first disaster. One of the clients with whom the company
had great exposure to, suddenly went bankrupt causing
Muthu and his team a huge loss. It took them back to the
stone age with the team size reducing from 65 to 8 in just
two months and there was a time when the office was shut
down and the team worked from Muthu's house.
took about 8 months of patience persistence to get his first
client. Meanwhile, waiting for the start as an entrepreneur,
several employment opportunities were knocking his door.
He credits his wife for constant support and encouragement
as it took great power to resist the temptation of getting
back into the comfort zone of employment.
The bankruptcy of the client caused a domino effect on the
business leading to a vicious cycle of no new clients and
not having the resources to serve the existing clients. The
business came to an all-time low, which drastically affected
the financial condition too.

Muthu and his team did not give up
despite the huge setback. It was in 2017,
when the team decided to give it another
shot and start all over again. Eka
Academy team created its very first open
house program called “Project
Dronacharya”, which is a “train the
trainer program”. This program became a
turning point for the company as it was a
runaway success. By 2018, the company
started to hold stability and then the
revival of the organization started. He
further adds, “This journey was possible
only due to 4 P's that I steadfastly
adhered to—Passion, Persistence,
Perseverance, and Patience.”
Often the experiences we have throughout
the journey help us to become the person
we are today. Throughout his journey,
Muthu too had the privilege to work with
great leaders, both in the corporate as well
as while serving in the military. But the
one specific leader who highly impacted
his life is Maj.Gen (retd). Dalvir Singh,
AVSM, Vr.C, VSM. While serving in the
military he reported to the then Brig.
Dalvir who was the sub area commander

for Srinagar. Maj Gen Dalvir was a para
commando belonging to the elite 10
Parachute Regiment (Special Forces).
Even though he was a highly decorated
officer, he was most down to earth when
he was with his officers he commanded.
The fact that Maj Gen. Dalvir was easily
approachable whenever in need and that
he was a good listener influenced Muthu
greatly.
Maj. Gen. Singh's just didn't influence
him as a person but also shaped Muthu
into the leader he is today. Muthu even
shares a notable incident that impacted his
journey, he says, “While I was in charge
of the security of a sensitive installation in
Srinagar, the Corps commander, who was
a senior Lieutenant General, found a
lapse which I was responsible for. But
when the Corps Commander started
questioning me the then Brig. Dalvir
stepped up and took the whole
accountability for the lapse. He told the
Corps commander “Sir, this officer
reports to me and if you want to hold
someone accountable, then hold me
accountable and not him”. His words still
echo in my ears and taught me a lesson on
accountability and responsibility which I
never forget even now.”
Being under command of a great mentor,
Muthu learned that the best way to
motivate is to stand and stay by the men
whom one commands, and that is what he
continued within the corporate life too. If
he does come across any team member
who has failed to close the deal, Muthu
himself goes along with the member to
personally close the deal. He further
asserts, “I have long learned that the
traditional approach of “carrot and stick”
sometimes fail. But the fail-proof way of
motivating is standing by the team
member who is struggling.”

Nearly half-century ago, after the oil
spillage along California's coast, the
first Earth Day was observed, as a
peaceful call to focus on the
environment. Today, we are in the
2020 was anticipated to be the
year of sustainable
environmental development.
There was a rising demand for
concerted and urgent action, along
with a suite of international
conferences scheduled to refocus
global engagement on these main
issues. Somehow the goal is being
fulfilled due to the global crisis of
COVID-19. It took a terrible
pandemic for people to realize that our
economy, society, and species is part
of something bigger which is more
holistic, and more powerful. Nature
has started healing itself but what
happens when the restriction upon
humans is lifted?
CEOs Aiming Beyond Profits
Business leaders need to consider
nature in the way they run the
businesses and view business as a
steward of a healthier future. Last
year, many leading CEOs pledged to
take a broader societal role and
responsibility through their
corporations and stated that they
would advocate others to practice the
same. This was considered as the
inflection point in the modern business
landscape. These business leaders said
they would form the strategies of their
businesses for a wide array of
"stakeholders," including consumers,
staff, suppliers, collaborators,
societies, and civil society.
These days, the business leaders'
mindset is becoming more holistic,
thus encouraging people to invest in
the environment—through
midst of a pandemic crisis on the 50th
Earth Day and it has highlighted the
threats we face. We have a contrasting
bond with the physical world — both
from a natural and man-made
viewpoint.
The forthcoming challenges are too
vast and too expensive for
governments to face alone which
makes the role of business leaders
more important.
There is an urgent need to change the
mindset towards the environment if
we plan to prosper in the long term.
Besides working urgently to counter
the current pandemic, collectively
people need to work towards lowering
carbon emissions; developing more
sustainable lifestyles; and, over time,
lowering human influence on nature
itself.

Today, employees, customers, and other stakeholders can

advocate for social and environmental issues, there is also
a need for investment and concrete corporate
commitments. Even executives agree there is a gap
between their purpose-driven PR strategies and the action
they take to back up those arguments. A study confirmed
that about 78% of executives believe that their businesses
are failing to deliver on their social intent commitments.
A Cross-Company Approach
Often the CEOs turn over the social responsibility
activities of the company to their CSR team. Corporate
social responsibility is a long-term profitability table
investment, but this does not mean other departments are
off the hook when it comes to solving such social issues.
The entire organization needs to follow the corporate
responsibility and act as the North Star for other
departments to ensure the company fulfill its social or
sustainable pledge.
Make use of the voice platforms
important for its brand identity, but it is also imperative for
its ultimate outcome. From an investment perspective, the
metrics of an economic, social, and governance (ESG) of
an organization are vital. According to research, fund
managers unanimously believe that investing in a
sustainable environment is not just a trend, it's here to stay.
More investors are utilizing the ESG performance into
their decisions, which will affect other results such as
long-term productivity, scalability, and market share. That
is why CEOs need to find new ways to harness social
impact as an agent for social good and transformation of
the industry.
We have witnessed that there is also a change in the
mindset of the workforce, as more millennials enter the
job market. A study suggests that by 2025, 75% of the
workforce will be made up of millennials who are actively
looking for businesses that uphold a greater sense of
mission. Besides, another study confirmed that 83% of
millennials will be more loyal to an organization that helps
them contribute to social and environmental problems.
Given the potential threat of issues such as climate change
and social injustice, there is an increasing sense of urgency
for businesses to give back to society. This, combined with
a lack of urgency seen in the government has shaken the
confidence of the public, which is another reason why
more people turn to business. Thus, making the
responsibility of CEOs to use their voice and platforms to
advocate for social causes.
Under the light of these developments, the social impact
policy of a business – or the lack of it – would inevitably
influence the long-term success of the business.

procurement teams need to make sure
that their purchasing practices comply
with the broader social priorities of the
company. If an organization is
committed to preserving the
environment, it needs to make sure

buyers may also procure in their B2B
deals from companies that underwrite
social impact incentives.
The same can be applied to
marketing. CEOs need to turn the
talk into action and fulfill their CSR.
Simply informing your customer that
you're concerned about a cause isn't
successful, nor is it convincing for
advertising. Instead, brands should
work with charities that are actively
committed to addressing the problem

  • 18. Maithillee Zaveri An Ingenious Artist And A Brilliant Entrepreneur Of The Art Industry O ften artists go underappreciated in the society, as art is always categorized amongst a hobby. Due to lack of support, there are few artists who get the opportunity to explore and opt for art as a career. One such artist who believed in herself and pursued her career in art is Maithillee Zaveri (Founder at Maithillee), despite of initially having no supporters she continued following her zeal for art. From doodling on rough pages to establishing her art studio, Maithillee has emerged as an ingenious leader. She was only 10 years old when she discovered her love for art, and since then she has been experimenting with th all kinds of mediums and colors. In the 10 grade, the University of Cambridge showcased one of her sculptures artwork and within the same year, she managed to sell 3 of her paintings. “I was ambidextrous and I struggled a lot in studies. My mind always wandered in doodling or just sketching whatever I would visualize & capture those memories. The doodles were always at the last 10 pages of all my notebooks,” said Maithillee. It was during her college days when the horizon towards art and history broadened and she decided to pursue it as a career. However, her family believed that there was no future in arts, but after seeing Maithillee establishing herself as an entrepreneur, successfully running her art studio and featuring throughout various publications, they started believing in her. As an artist, the asset you have is your art and it is difficult to get the exposure needed to succeed. For Maithillee too it was a struggle during the initial days of her career, as there Art Does Have a Future It was difficult to set up herself in the industry but with a lot of hard work and dedication, she managed to settle her art studio on the map of art galleries and prove that art does have a future. As art is the best therapy for mental health, Maithillee did overcome this time too. While researching, she also found out that the best platform to showcase art is social media. Social media did grant her with the noticeable attention she needed to showcase her art, thus landing her with lots of emails from art galleries across India. She started getting clients for whom she would commission artworks for their homes/offices. These contracts gave her the courage and strength to open her art studio in Mumbai in 2017. were not enough opportunities for the emerging artists. She had to physically struggle outside art galleries to meet the gallery owners and get her work noticed. All this was too overwhelming for a struggling artist who initially lacked support which led her into depression. She further added, “I thought I could sell through my own private collections directly to clients, conduct workshops for all age groups and do commission or customized works for clients too.” This way she also found a way to cut the commission for the galleries that feature other artwork. Her mission, through Maithillee, is to become a successful artist and help those talented artists, who dream big. She has been on her journey alone without any support so she understands the struggles of an artist closely. Ÿ Styling their office/walls as per their preference or giving them suggestions by closely working with interior designers Ÿ Commission works where an image given via messages or personally to the artist to paint it exactly the way it is. This also gives them the freedom to choose their required size, medium, and material they would wish to get it made on/with (material and medium). More about 'Maithillee' Ÿ Selling artworks through private collections and art exhibitions Ÿ Giving them Vastu tips as to what kind of paintings would suit their home/office This personal experience led her to create a platform that would assist the other struggling artist. These artists would not have to worry about any support and would focus on completing their dreams. Maithillee believes, when artists support each other, they grow. Each artwork has a different story attached to it so nobody can judge or analyze it. All one should do with art is to appreciate it. And this has always been her mission and goal. Her company provides various creative services for various clients across the globe. And without talent, there is no business, whatsoever. Becoming an entrepreneur came with a share of different struggles but Maithillee swayed all the struggles through sheer talent. She says, “Every individual has their own sets of qualities. But mine, are in the talent sector.” Where many artists stick to a particular theme, Maithillee believes in exploring all the options. This is what helps her in sharping her skills and become better daily because of talent triumphs at the end. Her key to success was also 'patience'. She did not rush and exhaust herself in the journey she awaited her opportunity patiently and did succeed. She adds, “It's very important to be patient in an art career. It may take days, weeks, months or even years to get noticed but don't lose hope because hard work always pays off!” The definition of smart and hard work is different for every individual. Maithillee, however, believes that to attain great heights and lead a better and comfortable life if both smart and hard work are incorporated equally. Such a person in due time attains all the accolades and recognition. Maithillee further asserts, “If you are not smart your hard work will never pay. Just like a donkey only does hard work, whereas a horse does hard work but uses his smartness whenever and wherever needed.” Similarly, for smart work is the result of hard work, as we keep working, we do gain experience which helps us attain excellence. Maithillee concludes by stating that the effort is important, but where to make that effort makes a difference. Efforts Make the Difference Without Talent, There Is No Business Art is serenity, compete with yourself, and not others. ’ 19

Capt Muthu Krishnan Iyyappan An Avid Leader Re- Engineering Training And Learning Using Structured Creativity All great leaders acquired their greatness through empowering their team – because as individuals they could not have attained the peaks that they ultimately attained as leaders. Empowering the team is the ultimate leap of faith that a leader can do. And right empowerment can create magic in the team. It gives a sense of fulfillment that can hardly be matched—along with infusing energy and enthusiasm in the team. Empowerment is also the magic wand that ensures ownership and accountability within the team members. The one factor that differentiates a pioneering business tycoon from an ordinary businessman is the quality of empowerment. One such empowering business leader is Capt Muthu Krishnan Iyyappan (Founder and CEO of Eka Academy) who has established himself as an extraordinary and pioneering business tycoon in the corporate training industry. He entered the industry despite people warning him not to because it was such a cluttered market, that a famous saying goes “if you don't know what to do, then become a trainer and tell others what to do.” He did become a trainer and indeed a good one. However, his journey was not a cakewalk, he encountered his share of challenges throughout the journey in establishing Eka Academy, a leading training solution provider today. The Domino Downfall of Business Muthu described his initial days of entrepreneurship experience as wadding in unchartered waters filled with sharks and crocodiles. The industry he did step into was the classic example of “Red Ocean” with absolutely no entry barriers, no pre-defined standards, and no regulations. It Muthu adds, “We had to mortgage our house to continue paying the salaries but I am proud to say that we have never defaulted even by a single month on the salaries to our team.” After the commencement of the journey, it was a dream run for Eka Academy. The team grew from its first employee to a team of 65 in just 3 years. By 2015, the company expanded to Europe, thereby becoming the first Indian training company to have their official presence in Europe. Unfortunately the very next year, Eka Academy faced its first disaster. One of the clients with whom the company had great exposure to, suddenly went bankrupt causing Muthu and his team a huge loss. It took them back to the stone age with the team size reducing from 65 to 8 in just two months and there was a time when the office was shut down and the team worked from Muthu's house. took about 8 months of patience persistence to get his first client. Meanwhile, waiting for the start as an entrepreneur, several employment opportunities were knocking his door. He credits his wife for constant support and encouragement as it took great power to resist the temptation of getting back into the comfort zone of employment. The bankruptcy of the client caused a domino effect on the business leading to a vicious cycle of no new clients and not having the resources to serve the existing clients.   • 21. Muthu and his team did not give up despite the huge setback. It was in 2017, when the team decided to give it another shot and start all over again. Eka Academy team created its very first open house program called “Project Dronacharya”, which is a “train the trainer program”. This program became a turning point for the company as it was a runaway success. By 2018, the company started to hold stability and then the revival of the organization started. He further adds, “This journey was possible only due to 4 P's that I steadfastly adhered to—Passion, Persistence, Perseverance, and Patience.” Often the experiences we have throughout the journey help us to become the person we are today. Throughout his journey, Muthu too had the privilege to work with great leaders, both in the corporate as well as while serving in the military. But the one specific leader who highly impacted his life is Maj.Gen (retd). Dalvir Singh, AVSM, Vr.C, VSM. While serving in the military he reported to the then Brig. The Best Shot Once Again Experiences Influencing Leadership Skills for Srinagar. Maj Gen Dalvir was a para commando belonging to the elite 10 Parachute Regiment (Special Forces). Even though he was a highly decorated officer, he was most down to earth when he was with his officers he commanded. The fact that Maj Gen. Dalvir was easily approachable whenever in need and that he was a good listener influenced Muthu greatly. Maj. Gen. Singh's just didn't influence him as a person but also shaped Muthu into the leader he is today. Muthu even shares a notable incident that impacted his journey, he says, “While I was in charge of the security of a sensitive installation in Srinagar, the Corps commander, who was a senior Lieutenant General, found a lapse which I was responsible for. But when the Corps Commander started questioning me the then Brig. Dalvir stepped up and took the whole accountability for the lapse. He told the Corps commander “Sir, this officer reports to me and if you want to hold someone accountable, then hold me accountable and not him”. His words still echo in my ears and taught me a lesson on accountability and responsibility which I never forget even now.” Being under command of a great mentor, Muthu learned that the best way to motivate is to stand and stay by the men whom one commands, and that is what he continued within the corporate life too. If he does come across any team member who has failed to close the deal, Muthu himself goes along with the member to personally close the deal. He further asserts, “I have long learned that the traditional approach of “carrot and stick” sometimes fail. But the fail-proof way of motivating is standing by the team member who is struggling.” Leading By Personal Example My mantra for a successful business is to follow the gut instinct and never to be afraid of a potential failure. ’ 21

Today, we are in the 2020 was anticipated to be the year of sustainable environmental development. There was a rising demand for concerted and urgent action, along with a suite of international conferences scheduled to refocus global engagement on these main issues. Somehow the goal is being fulfilled due to the global crisis of COVID-19. It took a terrible pandemic for people to realize that our economy, society, and species is part of something bigger which is more holistic, and more powerful. Nature has started healing itself but what happens when the restriction upon humans is lifted? CEOs Aiming Beyond Profits Business leaders need to consider nature in the way they run the businesses and view business as a steward of a healthier future. Last year, many leading CEOs pledged to take a broader societal role and responsibility through their corporations and stated that they would advocate others to practice the same. This was considered as the inflection point in the modern business landscape. These business leaders said they would form the strategies of their businesses for a wide array of "stakeholders," including consumers, staff, suppliers, collaborators, societies, and civil society. These days, the business leaders' mindset is becoming more holistic, thus encouraging people to invest in the environment—through midst of a pandemic crisis on the 50th Earth Day and it has highlighted the threats we face. We have a contrasting bond with the physical world — both from a natural and man-made viewpoint. The forthcoming challenges are too vast and too expensive for governments to face alone which makes the role of business leaders more important. There is an urgent need to change the mindset towards the environment if we plan to prosper in the long term. Besides working urgently to counter the current pandemic, collectively people need to work towards lowering carbon emissions; developing more sustainable lifestyles; and, over time, lowering human influence on nature itself. 22 SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT

A study confirmed that about 78% of executives believe that their businesses are failing to deliver on their social intent commitments. A Cross-Company Approach Often the CEOs turn over the social responsibility activities of the company to their CSR team. Corporate social responsibility is a long-term profitability table investment, but this does not mean other departments are off the hook when it comes to solving such social issues. The entire organization needs to follow the corporate responsibility and act as the North Star for other departments to ensure the company fulfill its social or sustainable pledge. Make use of the voice platforms important for its brand identity, but it is also imperative for its ultimate outcome. From an investment perspective, the metrics of an economic, social, and governance (ESG) of an organization are vital. According to research, fund managers unanimously believe that investing in a sustainable environment is not just a trend, it's here to stay. More investors are utilizing the ESG performance into their decisions, which will affect other results such as long-term productivity, scalability, and market share. That is why CEOs need to find new ways to harness social impact as an agent for social good and transformation of the industry. We have witnessed that there is also a change in the mindset of the workforce, as more millennials enter the job market.
