4. DEFINATION
GFRG panels are the composite material of gypsum
and glass fiber having an composition of
GYPSUM(CALCIUM SULPHATE) = 89-94 %
GLASS FIBRES = 4-6 %
PORTLAND CEMENT = 1-2 %
SAND OR SILICIOUS MATERIALS = 1- 5%
GFRG panels are the hollow boards which is been used
for the various component of building

5. INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE OF PROJECT
Providing affordable housing is a challenge for developing like
India.
India have an shortage of nearly 17.6 million houses.
There is also a challenge of disposal of industrial waste like
gypsum.
India having an nearly 2000 tones/day of gypsum waste
generations.
 GFRG panel housing provide an adequate solutions to the above
problems.
GFRG panels are manufactured by using a gypsum as a core

6. LITERATURE SURVEY
The research work has resulted in two PhD theses and
two PhD scholars are currently continuing the R&D
efforts.
The Department of Science and Technology,
Government of India, had awarded a research grant of Rs
1.32 corers to complete the research work and bring it to
a stage of technology transfer.
The demo building is already constructed by IIT
MADRAS to study the cost effectiveness and suitability
in costal areas

CONSTRUCTION
 GFRG panels are process and manufactured in
factory for the fixed size.
 The size of GFRG panels coming out of factory is
2.85 x12 m
 The panels are cut in factory as per given plan
sizes.
 Opening for doors and windows are made using
especial cutting tool.

•The finished boards are transported to the
site by stillage.
•The panels are hold vertical in order to avoid
damage due to movement.
•One stillage can hold 5 panels at a time .

•The foundation is constructed as per the given
plan using stone masonry.
•Usually strip foundation is adopted for gfrg
constructions.
•The plinth beams is constructed embebbed with
starter bars protruding 0.45m outside the plinth to

The required infilling is done
according to the design and
reinforcement bars are inserted where
ever needed

bearing length of 20mm.
The ribs are kept along the shorter direction of
room.
The top flange are cut and removed to
accommodate to micro beam cage as shown .

32. LIMITATION OF GFRG PANELS
Cannot be used for wall with circular or higher
curvature
Clear span shall be limited to 5m for residential
buildings, for non residential buildings, the
span shall be limited to as specified in Designs
Manual.

33. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
• GFRG panel building is designed based on limit state
method.
• The various permissible limits are given in design manual by
IIT madras
• The partial safety factor of load is considered to be 1.5
• The partial safety factor for material is also considered to be
1.5
• The constant value of response reduction factor is taken i.E
r=3

• Axial strength.
1. Unfilled Panel = (68-0.9e) kN
2. Filled Panels = (600-13.75e) kN
• Out of plane bending moment capacity.
1. Unfilled Panel = 1.40 kNm/m
2. Filled Panels = 2.83 kNm/m

The total saving of about 50% is observed

Total cost savings of 30% is observed

37. CONCLUSIONS
Use of GFRG panels as an alternative building material is concluded
to be an important step towards the development of rapid, eco-
friendly, low cost construction activities.
The work carried in concluded that there is saving in cost of
construction up to 30-40%
The saving in materials is around 50%
It is also concluded that GFRG buildings having more axial and
inplane bending moment capacity than conventional buildings.
The use of GFRG panels as an alternative has solved the problem of
disposal of gypsum waste having a capacity of 2000 tones/ day to
some extent.
