The session presents an initiative to build secure key management services in the OP-TEE project. Based on OP-TEE services (persistent storage, cryptography, time, etc) one could build a trusted application of store and use secure keys. An open source implementation for generic key services could be of interest. However there are many client APIs defined in the ecosystem which is a matter of concern for standardization of such services. The session will open a discussion on this and presents the current choice of the PKCS#11 Cryptoki. There can be lot of key attributes and cryptographic schemes to be supported. The session will present the current plans (starting from AES flavors) and what is currently missing in the OP-TEE (as certificate support, bootloader support). This session aims at getting feedback from the community on this topic, discuss about expected services and client APIs.

Making Networking Apps Scream on Windows with DPDKMichelle Holley
Abstract: Network bandwidth is precious and milliseconds matter for many user-mode applications and virtual appliances running on both Linux and Windows. In order to get the best network throughput to process and forward packets, developers need direct access to the NIC without going through the host networking stack. Until now, only developers on Linux and FreeBSD platforms were able to use DPDK to obtain these performance benefits but, we are happy to announce that we have an implementation of DPDK for the Windows platform!
Intel, with consultation from Microsoft, created a UIO driver for the Windows kernel to enable DPDK-linked applications running in user-mode to have direct access to NIC hardware resources through a Poll Mode Driver (PMD). We will demonstrate a test application with the same packets per second processing capabilities as Linux. Lastly, we will talk about the evolution of Microsoft Packet Direct and the differences we see between kernel-mediated IO and fast packet processing for user-mode applications with custom protocol stacks.
Speaker Bios: Omar Cardona is a Software Engineering Lead at Microsoft. He drives the design and architecture of Windows Virtual Networking/SDN and accelerations. He’s currently focused on Server and Container solutions for Private and Public Cloud. Prior to Microsoft, he was an Engineering Lead at IBM focusing on Ethernet/RDMA, Virtualization, and Performance, and L0 at the US Air Force. Devicetree has become the dominant hardware configuration language used when building embedded systems. Projects using Devicetree now include Linux, U-Boot, Android, FreeBSD, and Zephyr. However, it is notoriously difficult to write correct Devicetree data files. The dtc tools perform limited tests for valid data, and there there is not yet a way to add validity test for specific hardware descriptions. Neither is there a good way to document requirements for specific bindings. Work is underway to solve these problems. This session will present a proposal for adding Devicetree schema files to the Devicetree toolchain that can be used to both validate data and produce usable documentation.

As demand for smarter and more efficient manufacturing is growing, IoT technologies—including sensors, edge devices, gateways, servers and the cloud—are being used throughout the factory to compute deep learning analytics workloads at the appropriate location. Efficient data-driven manufacturing can help to reduce labor costs, increase quality and maximize profit. The biggest hindrance to achieving these outcomes is the difficulty in extracting data from vendor-locked and proprietary systems for analytics downstream.

"Intel has been building an entirely open source software ecosystem for data-centric computing, fully optimized for Intel® architecture and non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies, including Intel Optane DC persistent memory and Intel Optane DC SSDs. Distributed Asynchronous Object Storage (DAOS) is the foundation of the Intel exascale storage stack. DAOS is an open source software-defined scale-out object store that provides high bandwidth, low latency, and high I/O operations per second (IOPS) storage containers to HPC applications. It enables next-generation data-centric workflows that combine simulation, data analytics, and AI."
Unlike traditional storage stacks that were primarily designed for rotating media, DAOS is architected from the ground up to make use of new NVM technologies, and it is extremely lightweight because it operates end-to-end in user space with full operating system bypass. DAOS offers a shift away from an I/O model designed for block-based, high-latency storage to one that inherently supports fine- grained data access and unlocks the performance of next- generation storage technologies.

Varnish is infrastructure software - it is the bridge between the hardware and apps on top, a part of the stack. You sandwich it in between the clients and the conventional web servers, where it will cache data / assets, or anything HTTP, really. This is the basic picture, but it is more, of course.
Why do we add a cache? Web servers are not necessarily slow, but they are complex, and a cache will always outperform generating content again. Also, the cache may be close to the clients, reducing bandwidth, and have a strategy for when the backend server goes down. Quite often, it is a good idea to serve stale content instead of 404s or 5xx.

More beyond hardware NUMA awareness and TLS in process …
The threading model with worker threads works because we use few context switches compared to the amount of requests and data flowing through the system. We optimize to reduce the amount of context switches and locking.
The asynchronous direct IO is what separates MSE 3 from MSE 2 - we take control over the disk, performing disk optimization past challenges in Linux with the volume of soft page faults.
A bit more on VCL - The VCL language provides a lot of flexibility when it comes to making decisions in the cache, for example when it comes to caching behavior. VCL is also allows logic for routing, can do request manipulation of various kinds, business logic, tool connectors … the opportunity is endless to add value while keeping the core highly tuned and reliable.
