A new experience model for the smart home and consumer IoT [Endeavour Partners]Nalani Genser
We have been hearing about the emergence of consumer IoT for decades. Yet, while many pieces of the underlying technology have been available for many years (or longer), consumer Internet of Things (IoT) experiences have yet to make their way into the average consumer’s daily life. Today, challenges exist in delivering compelling use cases, user journeys, and user experiences that deliver meaningful value propositions that encourage adoption. This poses a number of questions: What shifts need to occur to (re)position the industry for true mass market adoption? What are the elements that the industry has been stuck on that might be holding it back? Might there be a change in where the value is created for consumers in the future? This white paper from Endeavour Partners will dive into these these questions, and present an alternative vision for the future of consumer IoT, through the lens of the smart home, exploring why the future is different than the one we had been expecting.

Digital convergence is changing the face of the enterprise. Smart building innitiatives are driving yet (un)connected devices like lights and sensors to converge onto the IP network. This session will highlight this imminent disruption. We will discuss the technical and business drivers and also touch upon the challenges including connectivity, on-boarding, security and management that enterprises face and how enterprise networks will evolve to accommodate this growth. The session will also introduce the Enterprise IOT development kit which provides a simple way to onboard sensors onto the network.
About SIGFOX
SIGFOX is the first and only operator of a cellular network fully dedicated to low throughput communication for connected objects. Leveraging on its patented UNB technology SIGFOX brings a revolution to the M2M and Internet of Things world by enabling large-scale connection of objects. The network already connects tens of thousands of objects in France and international cities.
SIGFOX provides an end-to-end solution for your communication chain, from your objects through to your information system, with unprecedented pricing models and low energy consumption.
As a network operator SIGFOX operates fixed-location
transceivers enabling your objects to be connected “out of the box”. However contrary to the telecommunication networks, the SIGFOX transceivers and the entire SIGFOX connectivity solution has been developed, built and deployed to only serve the low throughput M2M and IoT applications. As an operated longrange network, SIGFOX provides connectivity without the need to deploy specific network infrastructures for each application.
Unlike other narrow band or white space solution providers we do not require our customers to invest in network equipment, the SIGFOX network is simply available to any object equipped with our certified connectivity solutions.
From an application point of view, the SIGFOX connectivity solution functions as follows:
• SIGFOX compatible modems are integrated within the physical objects by our certified partner network
• The objects instruct the modems to send messages whenever and wherever needed
• The transmitted data is picked up by the SIGFOX transceivers, and routed to our managed service
• The SIGFOX servers verify the data integrity and route the messages to the application’s IT system.

MAAF Assurances, one of the leading French insurance companies, anticipate the upcoming regulation that will impose by 2015 that each household be equipped with a smoke detector. The fire and/or intrusion alert service that will be using the SIGFOX network will enable MAAF insured customers to be warned directly through SMS, in case the intrusion or smoke detectors send alarms and allow MAAF and their customers to be alerted if there is an anomaly, such as low battery, with the
smoke detector.
Clear Channel Outdooroperates stations throughout France. In order to avoid constant manual inspection of the ad stations, a remote monitoring application has been deployed and the SIGFOX network is used to communicate status information from each ad station to the IT system.

Update February 2017
Luxury home automation wasn’t a face of everyday life. Today it is, though gradually! Directly controlling and seamlessly staying connected with the home systems you use every day via a mobile device would significantly enhance your quality of life. It is not only about remotely controlling the lights, AC, fan, audio systems, curtains, television, kitchen appliances, garage doors, sprinklers from your smartphone from anywhere. Again it is not merely about regularly monitoring the security of your home and your kids from your workplace miles away. It is all about convenience and safety. It is about exploiting the latest of what technology has on offer. It is about saving energy significantly and contributing to the creation of a greener earth through use of energy efficient systems. A smart home offers all of these – comfort, convenience, monetary savings, and safety. Smart Automation has emerged as a reliable and leading service provider in this segment.
The project is a similar concept of the Smart House in which it uses ubiquitous computing. As a sub-group project manager for the Interactive House, core responsibility includes the implementation of server and database connections with a prototype model. The objective of the project was to study the communication between the devices of a house (i.e. light, temperature, and alarm) and remote mobile and desktop applications.

Hadoop World 2011: Security Considerations for Hadoop Deployments - Jeremy Gl...Cloudera, Inc.
Security in a distributed environment is a growing concern for most industries. Few face security challenges like the Defense Community, who must balance complex security constraints with timeliness and accuracy. We propose to briefly discuss the security paradigms defined in DCID 6/3 by NSA for secure storage and access of data (the “Protection Level” system). In addition, we will describe the implications of each level on the Hadoop architecture and various patterns organizations can implement to meet these requirements within the Hadoop ecosystem. We conclude with our “wish list” of features essential to meet the federal security requirements.
Maximizing the Business Value of Connected Devices by Transforming the CIO's ...Cognizant
With the vast proliferation of connected devices and smart devices, high-tech manufacturers can gain customers, increase loyalty and grow their product lines through the empowerment of CIOs, who are best-suited to take the lead in managing connected-device strategy. The other keys are designing a suitable IT infrastructure and entitlement management to best leverage connected and smart device data.
(ATS4-GS03) Partner Session - Intel Balanced Cloud Solutions for the Healthca...BIOVIA
Healthcare/Pharmaceutical -IT departments, under constant pressure to do more with less, face an ever increasing volume of regulatory requirements, infrastructure challenges, and demands from clinical end-users to support applications anytime, anywhere, on any device. Healthcare/Pharma CIOs have a hard enough time “keeping the lights on” and find it difficult to drive strategic initiatives that improve patient care or support growth.
Cloud computing can improve the efficiency of IT, increase organizational agility, and control costs, but how do organizations adopt interoperable, scalable solutions while minimizing industry concerns such as vendor lock-in and data breach?
In this session, attendees will learn about the key trends that are driving healthcare organizations toward cloud solutions that “balance” compute, network and storage concerns based on open, scalable infrastructure. We will look at real-world examples of how healthcare organizations are using the cloud today. Finally, we will discuss how healthcare cloud solutions can be improved with Intel platform capabilities.

6. Shortcomings.
In-house protocols are a mess. The current situation is a constraint
to the development of the Smart Home market.
Protocols do not meet basic requirements in terms of, e.g.
- Security: None fully met our security requirements
- Interoperability: Also within one technology not guaranteed
- Interference: Many protocols have significant interference issues with other wireless
technologies (e.g. WiFi, LTE 800)
Potential partners do not know which protocol will become the prevalent standard and
therefore hesitate to invest
The hardware remains expensive as protocol owners cooperate exclusively with single chip
manufacturer and protect their proprietary eco-systems
Missing of “Gold-Standard”, results in major barriers for mass-market adoption.
In the mid- and long-term, standardization is strongly needed.
