Working Internationally for Libraries Conference 2021
June 25, 2021
CILIP Working Internationally for Libraries Conference was a one-day virtual event supported by Arts Council England, in partnership with Libraries Connected, British Library, British Council, Carnegie UK Trust, CILIP International Libraries & Information Group, and CILIP Public & Mobile Libraries Group. The 2021 Conference explored ways of connecting with library services and sector professionals from across the world to inspire and inform local library services. Speakers from a diverse range of regions – UK, Europe, Canada, Africa, and the Middle East - shared best practices, new ideas, and successful examples of international working projects.

Role play: How open access could change librarians’ jobsd_r_jenkins
This presentation provides a definition of open access, looks at the Finch Report (http://www.researchinfonet.org/publish/finch/) and explains how it could affect libraries and identifies four areas in which open access could change librarians’ jobs. General themes regarding how open access could change librarians’ jobs are then looked at and conclusions drawn.
The presentation as a whole is very brief and general in nature, due to the specification given by the event organizers and the wide variety of prior knowledge that attendees had. I acknowledge that the topics covered are broad and deep and that this presentation intentionally does not cover all aspects of said topics.
This presentation was originally delivered at Manchester NLPN's #nlpnautumn event on 19th October 2013 (http://manchesternlpn.wordpress.com/2013/09/16/the-big-event-nlpnautumn/).

There's a trend in academic libraries to enlist librarians with instructional design experience to assist with developing information literacy instruction. Many institutions look for someone who has the knowledge and skills to design, develop and deploy e-learning objects while also taking on more traditional public service responsibilities. Recognizing the varied expertise of instructional designers and the various skills associated with the development of e-learning objects such as sound instructional design practices, technology proficiency, creatively and graphic arts, our institution has sought to create a team of instructional design librarians. The result has been the ability to create innovated and effective in-person and online instruction across the organization.

Big Data is more than just hype. The vast quantities of data now available have led to two important challenges that are fundamentally changing the way we develop data-intensive systems. The first is at the data management level, where we are finally moving beyond vanilla MapReduce towards infrastructure that allows for more flexible data processing pipelines. The second challenge is transitioning from quantity to quality and distilling genuine knowledge from the raw data. For this, we still need innovative algorithms that facilitate data cleaning, unsupervised and semi-supervised learning, knowledge harvesting, and knowledge integration. Examples include data integration, and large-scale knowledge bases such as UWN/MENTA, and collections of commonsense knowledge such as WebChild.

Pfau Long Architecture hosted a workshop at CAIS 2016 on learning commons. The workshop focused on how educators and designers are working toward a common goal of how to evolve a traditional study space for learning. The learning commons concept is becoming increasingly widespread for libraries at public and independent schools as well as colleges and universities. One of the drivers of adopting a learning commons approach is to mirror the real world by encouraging a more hands-on approach to research and problem solving.

What changes do 21st C school libraries have to embrace in order to remain relevant? A look at the change process, how one school re-envisioned itself, and how to achieve similar changes through thoughtful programming and design choices.
The trick always is to get people to realise that they need to change and that it is not necessarily threatening. This presentation is similar to others I have used in creating new Scenarios for Libraries in all sectors. This is an essential element of change management. The future of libraries and publishing is fundamental to re-thinking and the management of risk.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
