How does a great Leader recognize when a Team Member may have an obstacle or
self-doubt that is keeping them from doing their best?
Poor Attendance
Negative Attitude
Performance Issues
No Accountability
Lack of Motivation
It is our responsibility as Leaders to contribute in making our Team Members
more resilient. We should mentor, coach and guide our Team to overcome
whatever adversity they may encounter and to stay on track. The most important
task is to let your Team Members know that if they need anything your are there
to support them and encourage them to utilize you as a resource.

OVERCOMINGTHEODDS
Team Member Story:
Team Member had been with the company since the property opened. She is
always upbeat and wearing a smile. However, a car accident sent her down a
road of unforeseen circumstances in which she found herself homeless. She
had been living in her car for 3 weeks prior to reaching out for assistance.
When she finally stopped by my office, she was at the point of despair and
ready to end it all. We immediately began making phone calls with the Team
Member; first to EAP and then to our community partners to see where we
could find immediate housing. The Drop Inn Center had an opening and we
referred her there. She spent 12 days in the shelter and through their Rapid
Rehousing program she was able to secure an apartment with assistance from
the shelter. She is working overtime to furnish her new place and is continuing
to see a counselor on a regular basis as well to keep herself mentally healthy
and on track.
Through all of this the Team Member continues to come to work everyday and
be a Success
OVERCOMINGTHEODDS
Team Member Story
Team Member has been with the company less than a year. She came
from the hospital to the Employee Relations office because, she had
been the victim of domestic violence the prior evening. She had hand
prints and lacerations on her neck and a fractured jaw. The incident took
place in front of her 2 year old son. We made calls to EAP, child’s
daycare and worked with her department to get a personal leave of
absence. She made arrangements with family out of town to keep her
son so, she could return to work. The PLOA allowed her to heal and
make plans for son’s care. She is also taking advantage of EAP to work
through the mental health issues associated with domestic violence. We
continue to check-in with the Team Member to make sure that she is
doing well and continue to offer support as needed.
OVERCOMINGTHEODDS
Team Member Story
Team Member had been working for the company for 8 months when he had
gone to his Supervisor and stated that he had an addiction and needed to talk
to someone about how to get help before he lost his job and his family. The
Supervisor brought the Team Member to our office and discussed that he was
a recovering addict that started to reuse cocaine and was homeless. We made
some phone calls to the local rehabilitation center that took him in with
guidelines that he had to follow providing him with the shelter that he needed
as well as the counseling and rehabilitation. The Team Member was released
after 10 weeks and returned to work and has been working for the company
and has recently been promoted to a Lead position and celebrating his 2 year
anniversary with the company.
OVERCOMINGTHEODDS
Each Team Member has strengths that add value. It is our responsibility as
Great Leaders to help them overcome challenges.
Sometimes, all you need to do is open up a dialogue with the Team Member to
get an understanding of their challenges.
BUILD TRUST!
