This document summarizes GIS analysis and visualization collaboration between libraries and county GIS staff. It includes maps and data on checkout patterns and demographic trends for West Regional and North Regional libraries. One week of checkout data is visualized to show that 78% of checkouts from West Regional and 62% of checkouts from North Regional were within a 10 minute drive time. Additional analysis looked at library service areas defined by 10, 13, and 15 minute drive times and percentages of households and cardholders within each area. Possibilities for further analysis are discussed.

This document summarizes key findings from a study on advocating for public libraries in Victoria, Australia. It shows that public libraries provide significant benefits that outweigh their costs, with benefit-cost ratios ranging from 1.8 to 10.7 depending on the calculation method. Economic impact analysis found that libraries contribute $722 million to state income and 4,430 jobs. User surveys found high willingness to pay for library services. The study equips library managers with tools and data to effectively advocate for the value of public libraries.
The document discusses data storage units and sizes. It notes that 1 byte = 8 bits, and defines kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, exabytes, zettabytes. It states that global IP traffic grew from 15 exabytes per month in 2009 to 64 exabytes per month in 2014, and the number of internet devices will grow from 5 billion in 2010 to 22 billion in 2020. Storage needs are increasing exponentially and one zettabyte is equal to a trillion gigabytes.
Final Xerox Reconfiguration Presentationmpudlitzke
This document proposes options to reduce costs and increase productivity at a copy center. It summarizes the current situation of overcapacity, high utilization rates, and a manual ordering process. It then outlines goals like reducing expenses, improving workflow and communication. Specific proposals are made to reduce vended jobs and costs through a web-based print-on-demand system to replace bulk literature printing, fulfill orders on demand and eliminate obsolete inventory. Projected savings and ROI are provided showing costs recouped within 8 months.
GeoDemographics and GeoCoding: An introduction to Sources and MethodsRichard Cantwell
This document provides an introduction to geodemographics and geocoding sources and methods. It discusses census data from Ireland including variables and geographies collected. It also outlines address data sources like GeoDirectory and challenges with addresses. Examples are given of combining different data sources like census data with geographic boundaries and address data with spending estimates. The importance of privacy and data protection is also highlighted.
The document discusses the evolution of hosting and the rise of cloud hosting. It notes that cloud hosting provides on-demand delivery and consumptive billing, combining elements of previous hosting models. The cloud represents the greatest hosting ecosystem, with fundamentals including on-demand access, automated scaling, and real-time flexibility. Going forward, hosting providers must adapt to customer needs by offering hybrid technologies and acting as the fundamental hosting platform.
The document discusses predicting rent prices in London using machine learning. The author collected rent data from Zoopla and demographic data from London Datastore to train various algorithms. Random Forest had the lowest mean squared error of 0.1084 on test data compared to Gradient Boosting, Support Vector Regression, and KNN. Feature importance analysis found number of bedrooms and location most important. The predictions closely matched actual rents more than Zoopla estimates in examples shown. Future work could include more property details and an app for rent predictions.

From User Experience to Earth ExperienceUser Vision
User Vision held a presentation by Gerry McGovern, author of the book World Wide Waste, about the impact of our digital lifestyle on the environment. Gerry's talk was a data-filled exploration of the scale of the problem and an invitation for individuals and organisations to act to mitigate the problem. These measures range from remembering to turn off your computer overnight to considering the amount of data that you produce, share and store.
Gerry also outlines the Digital Waste Audit that is being developed to help evaluate an organisation's current level of digital waste and develop ways to improve their Earth Experience. See on YouTube https://youtu.be/Vy5ZaBc-hHY
Judson ISD implemented several green computing initiatives to reduce their environmental impact and energy costs, including virtualizing servers, deploying desktop virtualization with nComputing X-Series devices, purchasing more energy efficient computers and monitors, automating computer shutdowns, and establishing equipment recycling programs. This allowed them to reduce acquisition costs by 50%, lower annual energy costs per computing seat from $29.78 to $7.44, and save over $155,000 per year through automated shutdowns alone.
Greater Cincinnati GPS Household Survey Pilot ResultsAndrew Rohne

South Central Ozarks Council of Governments Broadband Study Findingsmobroadbandnow
The survey summarizes broadband access and usage among residential and business users in South Central Ozark region, which includes Howell, Texas, Wright, Oregon, Shannon, Douglas and Ozark counties. For residents, the survey found nearly half have DSL internet access and most use internet for communication and information searching. Businesses reported broadband as very important for operations, but 30% lack access and cite high costs and unavailability as barriers. Faster speeds and more competition were cited as potential benefits of enhanced broadband.
The MassCloud network successfully provided Wi-Fi connectivity for thousands of attendees at the Global Citizen 2015 music festival featuring major performers like Beyonce, Pearl Jam, and Coldplay. The network handled over 8,500 simultaneous users and over 1 terabyte of total bandwidth usage during the event. When cellular networks failed due to overload, the MassCloud network was able to continue supporting users. Suggestions are provided for improving the network and services for future events.
Swiss Territorial Data Lab - geo Data Science - colloque FHNWRaphael Rollier
The document summarizes a presentation from the Swiss Territorial Data Lab (STDL) about applying data science techniques to geospatial challenges in Switzerland. STDL introduced their 4D platform for analyzing temporal geospatial data, described projects using machine learning to detect buildings and swimming pools from aerial imagery to update government registries, and discussed opportunities for cantons to use STDL's tools and methods. A representative from the canton of Thurgau provided their perspective on how STDL's work could help complete data migrations, identify unauthorized construction, and enable new applications beyond official surveys.
The document summarizes changes in solid waste management in Florida due to tighter budgets and increased recycling. It discusses trends like single-stream recycling, automated collection, once-per-week garbage pickup, and incentive programs. New technologies like RFID and cameras are helping optimize routes and measure diversion. While recycling has increased, more work is needed in organics recycling to meet the state's 75% diversion goal. Overall, the "old thoughts" about waste are changing to focus on managing resources more efficiently.
