This document contains information about an assignment on lighting design for a group of students. It includes four tasks related to daylighting: 1) Defining daylit spaces based on distance from windows and glazing area 2) Discussing external shading devices and their advantages/disadvantages 3) Analyzing daylighting strategies and recommendations for improving lighting at the USM Guest House in Penang 4) Evaluating illuminance, temperature, and humidity levels at Dataran Madani in Penang and providing recommendations to address direct sunlight and lack of thermal comfort. Tables of illuminance and humidity readings are referenced.

3. TASK A – Daylight Space
Daylight systems collect natural light and deliver it deep into
the buildings.
The term ‘daylit space’ by HM Government, refers to:
Any space:
o Within 6m of a window wall, provided that the glazing area
is at least 20% of the internal area of the window wall.
o Below rooflights, provided that the glazing area is at least
10% of the floor area.
1) Tubular daylight devices.
2) Vertical systems.
3) Horizontal systems.
4) Fibre optical devices.

Glass façade with low emissivity glass is
reflective on the outside by allowing daylight
into the building and minimising heat from
the sun.

Roof design
The roof of the building has ‘diamond dome’ skylight
made from laminated tempered glass. In the dome
space there are also fixed blinds that filter and
diffuse the daylight to provide uniform and glare-
free daylight for the offices around the atrium.

4. TASK B – External Shading
External shading devices incorporated in the building facade
to limit the internal heat gain resulting from solar
radiation.

The USM Guest House is
located at a strategic and
scenic hill within the
University campus. It is
an iconic building
surrounded with greens,
along with a mesmerizing
view of Penang's Bridge.

6. TASK D – Dataran Madani, Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang

Dataran Madani is one part of
the Penang State Mosque. It is
located at the junction of Jalan
Air Itam and Jalan Masjid
Negeri. It was constructed in
the 1970s and designed by the
great Brazillian architect, Oscar
Niemeyer. Occupying a 4.6-
hectare site and making it the
biggest mosque in the state.
