Cooperative Extension
• NC Cooperative Extension Service and NCSU have developed an evidence-based food
safety training course called Safe Plates that has been taught in Brunswick County for
several years. A class was held in early 2020 and then in-person classes were halted as
a result of the pandemic. Local restaurants and other food service establishments were
asking for this training. When Safe Plates became available in virtual format, the Family
and Consumer Science staff offered to be a pilot county to make it available as soon as
possible for our local establishments. We had the first five people in the state to complete
the training and pass the Certification Test. To date, 12 people from Brunswick County have
registered for the on-line training. In-person testing dates are available monthly through
the end of 2021. The hope is to offer both in-person and on-line training in the future.
• This year, we had over 30 teachers and 900 students who engaged in hands-on learning
experiences with butterflies through our partnership with local schools. Students watched
the organisms transform from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly before releasing them in
school gardens—observing, analyzing, and recording their findings along the way.
• Brunswick County 4-H was selected as winners of the National 4-H Healthy Living Dolphin
Tank. This team will receive a $1,000 award from the Walmart Foundation for an action
plan that mitigates food insecurity via small space gardening. From old pallets to two liter
plastic bottles, this team found innovative ways to grow food in unconventional spaces.
• Over 700 second graders and middle schoolers in Brunswick County participated in the
embryology program this year. Over 85% of teachers indicated that this program increased
students' knowledge of STEM and the food system.
• FCS agent Meghan Lassiter conducted programs for over 200 participants related to
nutrition, reading food labels, physical activity, and more! Pictures attached of Honey
Gingered Fruit Salad recipe and video demonstration are available on our YouTube
Channel: youtube.com/watch?v=hfYrnkFer6E
Engineering
• Brunswick County Courthouse Renovation Update: Macsons brought out the crane this
past week. They completed the removal of the existing pre-cast wall panel and removed
the old cooling tower walls. Macsons finished the 3rd-floor demolition, opening up
Grey to start framing and TA Woods for in-wall rough-ins. On the second floor, trades are
making headway with demolition. Phase 2 includes a new three-story glass window wall
on the south side of the building, remodeling the existing Juvenile Services courtroom,
remodeling the District Court Judges office area, and other associated remodeling.
Finance
• Brunswick County Finance received the Government Finance Officers Association
Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for Fiscal Year End June 30, 2020, and the
Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the Fiscal Year 2020–2021. These awards
represent a significant achievement by Brunswick County. It reflects the commitment of
the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental financial
reporting and budgeting. Brunswick County has received the Certificate of Excellence in
Financial Reporting for 19 consecutive years and the Distinguished Budget Presentation
Award for 15 consecutive years.

• The month of May was both busy and productive. The Shop completed 338 customer Work
Order tickets. Along with taking care of our customers there also comes a time when we
have to inspect and service the shop equipment.
Mosquito Control
• The division received 17 mosquito requests for service in May. Mosquito traps we set
across the county on May 25 to evaluate current mosquito populations. The average
number of mosquitoes collected was 126 specimens per trap. Additionally, 72% of the
mosquitoes collected were bird feeding mosquitoes. The weather pattern for early June
suggests mosquito populations will increase.
Parks and Recreation
• Congratulations to Amber Caison on her promotion to Northwest Park Supervisor this
month.

  • 5. Cooperative Extension • NC Cooperative Extension Service and NCSU have developed an evidence-based food safety training course called Safe Plates that has been taught in Brunswick County for several years. A class was held in early 2020 and then in-person classes were halted as a result of the pandemic. Local restaurants and other food service establishments were asking for this training. When Safe Plates became available in virtual format, the Family and Consumer Science staff offered to be a pilot county to make it available as soon as possible for our local establishments. We had the first five people in the state to complete the training and pass the Certification Test. To date, 12 people from Brunswick County have registered for the on-line training. In-person testing dates are available monthly through the end of 2021. The hope is to offer both in-person and on-line training in the future. • This year, we had over 30 teachers and 900 students who engaged in hands-on learning experiences with butterflies through our partnership with local schools. Students watched the organisms transform from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly before releasing them in school gardens—observing, analyzing, and recording their findings along the way. • Brunswick County 4-H was selected as winners of the National 4-H Healthy Living Dolphin Tank. This team will receive a $1,000 award from the Walmart Foundation for an action plan that mitigates food insecurity via small space gardening. From old pallets to two liter plastic bottles, this team found innovative ways to grow food in unconventional spaces. • Over 700 second graders and middle schoolers in Brunswick County participated in the embryology program this year. Over 85% of teachers indicated that this program increased students' knowledge of STEM and the food system. • FCS agent Meghan Lassiter conducted programs for over 200 participants related to nutrition, reading food labels, physical activity, and more! Pictures attached of Honey Gingered Fruit Salad recipe and video demonstration are available on our YouTube Channel: youtube.com/watch?v=hfYrnkFer6E Engineering • Brunswick County Courthouse Renovation Update: Macsons brought out the crane this past week. They completed the removal of the existing pre-cast wall panel and removed the old cooling tower walls. Macsons finished the 3rd-floor demolition, opening up Grey to start framing and TA Woods for in-wall rough-ins. On the second floor, trades are making headway with demolition. Phase 2 includes a new three-story glass window wall on the south side of the building, remodeling the existing Juvenile Services courtroom, remodeling the District Court Judges office area, and other associated remodeling. Finance • Brunswick County Finance received the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for Fiscal Year End June 30, 2020, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the Fiscal Year 2020–2021. These awards represent a significant achievement by Brunswick County. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental financial reporting and budgeting. Brunswick County has received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for 19 consecutive years and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for 15 consecutive years.
