School overview
• A vibrant, multi-disciplinary School with an
  international outlook
• One of Brunel’s largest Schools. Five
  Departments with approximately 2,300
  undergraduate students, 250 postgraduate
  taught students and 165 PhD students
• All Departments scored highly in the last
  Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and were
  ranked excellent by the Quality Assurance
  Agency for Higher Education (QAA) for
  teaching.
• NSS rankings are strong across the School
• 15 research centres deliver influential and
  innovative research
Head of School
Professor Justin Fisher, Head of School
• Professor of Political Science
• Director of the Magna Carta Institute, an international think tank
    bringing together leaders in politics, law, business, media and academia
• Consultant to several key authorities including, the Electoral Commission,
    the Committee on Standards in Public Life and the Council of Europe

Professor Clare Williams, Deputy Head of School
• Joined the School of Social Sciences in June 2011 from King’s College
    London
• Professor of Medical Sociology and Director of the Centre for
    Biomedicine and Society (CBAS)
• Secured grants worth £2.4m for multi-disciplinary research on clinical,
    ethical and social issues associated with innovative medical technologies

  • 2. School overview • A vibrant, multi-disciplinary School with an international outlook • One of Brunel’s largest Schools. Five Departments with approximately 2,300 undergraduate students, 250 postgraduate taught students and 165 PhD students • All Departments scored highly in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and were ranked excellent by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) for teaching. • NSS rankings are strong across the School • 15 research centres deliver influential and innovative research

Head of School Professor Justin Fisher, Head of School • Professor of Political Science • Director of the Magna Carta Institute, an international think tank bringing together leaders in politics, law, business, media and academia • Consultant to several key authorities including, the Electoral Commission, the Committee on Standards in Public Life and the Council of Europe Professor Clare Williams, Deputy Head of School • Joined the School of Social Sciences in June 2011 from King’s College London • Professor of Medical Sociology and Director of the Centre for Biomedicine and Society (CBAS) • Secured grants worth £2.4m for multi-disciplinary research on clinical, ethical and social issues associated with innovative medical technologies

Brunel Graduate School • All postgraduate students become a member of the Graduate School when commencing their studies • The Graduate School supports all postgraduate students throughout their time at Brunel offering a range of development services and activities: – Skills training – Workshops and seminars – Social and networking events – Excellent facilities – Provides a voice for PG students

Editor's Notes

  1. Facilities: there is a quiet study room, postgraduate common room with plug-in points, internet kiosks, fully equipped kitchen, conference room with AV facilities, storage locker hire and a laptop loan scheme
  2. In terms of training opportunities, the Graduate School offers a Master’s Skills Training programme which helps develop your study skills and improves your employabilityFor example, the programme offers workshops on dissertations, writing skills and sessions on CV and interview techniquesResearch Modules for PhD students are available which aim to provide the knowledge and skills needed at each stage of research studyThe Graduate School also offers online training courses
  3. The Graduate School building is a welcoming place for postgraduate students to come to for advice, quiet study, and to socialise. The Graduate School is a space set aside exclusively for postgraduate students to use at any time of day or night, as it is accessible 24/7 by a proximity card.The lower level includes the Postgraduate Common Room, a kitchen, a Quiet Study Room, a Conference Room, and internet kiosks. Upstairs, you will find the staff offices, including the Graduate School Reception, where you can come for advice between 9am – 5pm on weekdays. The Postgraduate Study Centre is a computer room accessible only to postgraduate students.You are also entitled to borrow a Graduate School laptop for a one week loan, free of charge. Small storage lockers are also available for use during your time as a postgraduate student
